donna cill wins humanitarian award
Donna Cill, MSN, RN, FNP, is congratulated by Lester Lieberman, board chairman, and Lisa Block, program officer of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey for being named a recipient of the Foundation’s 2007 Humanism in Healthcare Award.

Donna Cill, an education specialist in the department of Education and Professional Development and a student in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at UMDNJ-School of Nursing, was recently awarded the Humanism Award from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey. Donna, along with two nursing students from the UMDNJ School of Nursing received the award at a ceremony held at the Dolce Hamilton Park in Florham Park.

“Donna is a caring and compassionate nurse leader who has worked diligently to improve nursing education and practice in a variety of healthcare environments. Her commitment to “raising the bar” in nursing practice stems from a deep desire to ensure that patients and their families receive the best possible healthcare,” notes Dr. Cheryl Holly, Professor and DNP Program Director

Donna is devoted to helping adolescents and teenagers live healthier, happier lives. She points to her own experiences as a teen mother as a motivating factor in her passionate advocacy for youth. As part of her doctoral study she is developing a curriculum aimed at reducing incidences of teenage pregnancy and other high-risk health behaviors which, she says, account for two-thirds of all deaths among adolescents in the U.S.

“My goal is to increase healthy behaviors in adolescents, assist teens to develop their strengths and talents and support them through safe passage into adulthood,” Donna explains.

Prior to her appointment at The University Hospital, Donna served as director of critical care at East Orange General Hospital, Director of Education and Training at the Children’s Health Fund, in New York City, and Director of Nursing at the Plainfield Health Department. She also has eight years of experience as a staff nurse at hospitals in New Jersey and Florida.

Donna earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of North Florida and her Master of Science in Nursing from the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Columbia University.

Medical oncologist and hematologist, Dr. Margarette R. N. Bryan and liver transplant surgeon, Dr. Dorian J. Wilson, were awarded with the Francis Black Humanitarian Award. The award program, sponsored by the Friends’ Health Connection, recognizes individuals in healthcare who go above and beyond to help others.

Dr. Bryan, who specializes in head and neck cancer and breast cancer among minority patients, was recognized for her hallmark ability to treat the patient, not just the disease. “Recovering patients, as well as their families, have showered Dr. Bryan with accolades for her sensitivity and kindness. Patients often comment on her strength, honesty and support because she is there for them during the most difficult times in their lives,” reports social worker, Harriet Jernquist.

Dr. Wilson, who is also Director of the Healthcare Foundation Center for Humanism and Medicine at the New Jersey Medical School, was honored for his commitment and tireless efforts in the teaching of humanism and professionalism in medicine. "Dr. Wilson exemplifies the meaning of a true humanist. His dedication to the ideology of a humanist approach in healthcare is shown each day in his interactions with patients, healthcare professionals, medical students, and humanism scholars. Dr. Wilson fosters principles of respect and dignity for the individual,” reports Dr. George F. Heinrich, associate dean of the New Jersey Medical School.

The two were honored at an awards ceremony at the Buttonwood Manor in Matawan, New Jersey.
