RE:              Traffic Cameras / Violations 

Please be advised that the City of Newark has installed traffic control cameras at various intersections throughout the city.  These cameras are intended for the purpose of monitoring / deterring vehicles from running red traffic lights.  While we know for certain of the cameras in the City of Newark, similar cameras may have been set up in other municipalities, so this memorandum is being sent to all fleet contacts so that it can be distributed to all personnel who drive UMDNJ vehicles.

The Newark Red Light Photo Enforcement Program uses automated camera systems and sensors to detect red light violations.  A red light violation occurs when a vehicle illegally enters the intersection during the red light phase.  Vehicles positioned behind the legal stop line (crosswalk) after the light turns red and entering the intersection in a continuous motion will cause the camera to automatically record the violation.

Please be reminded that as per University Policy, neither UMDNJ, nor Logistical Services, is responsible for payment of any moving / parking violations incurred while driving UMDNJ vehicles.  Any violations received will be sent to the department that maintains the vehicle and the department’s index will be IDT’d for the amount of the violation (currently $85 in Newark).  At that point it is solely the responsibility of the department the vehicle is assigned to, to investigate the violation and obtain reimbursement from the driver in question.
