STUDENT FINANCIAL AID HANDBOOK

2009-2010

Chapter One

WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID?

Financial aid consists of three basic types: loans, scholarships/grants and work study:

  • Loans are financial aid which must be repaid.
  • Scholarships and grants are financial aid which does not have to be repaid.
  • Work study consists of part-time jobs for which you are paid on an hourly basis.  Money is earned while attending school; does not have to be repaid.

At UMDNJ, these three basic types of financial aid come from a variety of sources: the federal government, the State of New Jersey, UMDNJ itself, or outside agencies, organizations, and donors.
