CHAPTER NINE

LOAN REPAYMENT/FORGIVENESS PROGRAM

Loan Repayment and Forgiveness Program (LRP) offer alternative options to traditional programs.

Some are "front end" programs‚ in which individuals borrow or accept scholarship funds with a commitment to fulfill a specified service at the completion of their educational program. Some are "back end" forgiveness programs‚ that pay specified amounts for educational debt incurred while in school in return for a specified service.

In the state of New Jersey‚ The Primary Care Physician and Dentist Loan Redemption Program was created to alleviate the states mal–distribution of primary care physicians and dentists in rural and inner urban areas. The LRP assists physicians and dentists who agree to work in an underserved area by redeeming coupons to reduce educational debt incurred during medical and dental school up to $120‚000.00 over a four (4) year period‚ in return for service in an underserved area of the state.
