Office of Student Financial Aid
RE: Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) and Community Service
Academic Year 2009-2010
________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Office of Student Financial Aid is currently planning the Federal Work Study (FWS) Program for the 2009-2010 academic year. If any department is interested in employing FWS students please complete and return the attached Federal Work Study Departmental Request Form to the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Federal funds are granted to the University, which enables us to create job opportunities for eligible students. Such employment must be in the public interest, and the creation of the job must not result in the displacement of currently employed workers, or impair existing contracts for services. Monies allocated to UMDNJ, combined with a contribution from the employer, pay 100% of the student’s salary, which is received biweekly through the University payroll system. Employing departments are expected to contribute 25% of the FWS student’s earnings.
See below for definition of Community Service Federal Work Study.
During the academic year, students are limited to work twenty (20) hours per week without exceeding their FWS award total. During official vacation periods, they may be authorized to work thirty-five (35) hours per week.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM
Part of the Federal Work Study Program provides funding for jobs to serve the community. Listed below is the definition, which will assist you in determining if your department has positions that fulfill the requirements.
All wages paid for community service positions are funded at no cost to the department.
Program Purpose
The purpose of the FWS Program was amended to include encouragement to students receiving program assistance to participate in community service activities.
Community Service Definitions
The Community Service component of the FWS Program required that these jobs primarily benefit the community. The services provided must be open and accessible to the community. The services must be publicized to the community and the members of the community must use the services. If your department is able to provide a FWS job that reflects these guidelines, then check “yes” in the Community Service Position box on the request form.
The definition of community services was amended to read: Services which are identified by an institution of higher education, through formal or informal consultation with local nonprofit, governmental, and community based organizations as designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their needs, including
