Educational Services offered by the Health Sciences Library

Library staff provide training on a wide variety of topics. Individual and group sessions may be scheduled and training on any topic can be easily integrated into a school’s curriculum or a specific course. Librarians are available to conduct training during the week, between 9am and 9pm. The selected courses listed below provide an overview of topics for which training can be scheduled. CINAHL Basic Search Techniques
Participants will learn effective techniques for searching the CINAHL database. Additional skills covered include the ways to save searches and full text articles; how to share results with collaborators; creating RSS or email alerts for the latest updates based on journals, authors or subjects; and importing citations to the Endnote reference management software.
CINAHL/Pubmed/OvidSP Medline
Participants will learn simple, effective techniques for searching these databases. The benefit of personal accounts, saving searches and full text articles, sharing results with collaborators, creating alerts for current awareness, and importing citations into the Endnote reference management software will also be covered.
Creating Qualtiy Documents with Word
Learn how to use the capabilities of Microsoft Word to easily create attractive documents. We will discuss some of the most commonly used functions and features, as well as a few that you might have wished for but didn’t know Word could do. Course Materials

Creating Great Presentations with PowerPoint
Learn how to create dynamic presentations using PowerPoint. This introductory session will address formatting concepts, incorporating graphics, printing options and other basic concepts. Class Materials and Video Tutorials:

Evidence Based Health Care (EBHC)
Call it “Evidence Based Nursing Practice” or “Evidence Based Medicine,” the principles are the same for all health-related professions. Professions in nursing, medicine, physical therapy, psychology, and social work are using EBHC to provide more effective patient care. This course provides an overview of what EBHC means to clinical practice and research and the resources that the library has available for specific disciplines. Video Tutorials:

Point of Care Tools
Bedside tools, pocket tools, point of care tools- these resources have many names and one purpose - to provide quick, up to date, evidence-based information where it is needed. Learn how to use the resources available through the Health Science Library, including Essential Evidence Plus (EE+) DynaMed and FirstConsult. Participants will have a chance to compare the resources and try them out on mobile devices.
Excel - Just the Basics
This class will get you started in effectively using Excel 2007. In this class you will learn how Excel 2007 differs from older versions  and receive an introduction to the essential elements of creating a useful spreadsheet. A wealth of resources have been licensed by the University Libraries and many others can be found on the Internet. Learn what resources are available, how to search them, and a few tips on improving your presentations by using better media.
Manage Your Citations With EndNote for Windows
Learn the basics of this powerful bibliographic management program. Attendees will learn how to enter references, import references from Ovid and other databases, work with figures and charts, change publication styles, and insert references into a paper. Manage Your Citations with EndNote Web
A web-based bibliographic program that complements the desktop version offers users access to the same basic functionality of the program. Learn how to import references from the Ovid databases and the ISI Web of Knowledge, and organize references into groups.  Also learn to insert references in the correct format into Word documents, and transfer references.   Course Materials:

Searching Tips: EBSCOHost Databases
Learn about the new EBSCO 2.0 search aids. Discover ways to save your searches, save your articles, create RSS feeds and alerts, send or share results, set up searches to get the latest updates based on journal, author or subject and how to import citations to reference management software.
Web 2.0: RSS Feeds
In this workshop participants will learn how to set up an RSS reader using Google as well as the best places to search for blogs of interest and how to add them to the reader. The class will also cover how to set up RSS feeds for a favorite journal table of contents, news headlines, subject searches in Google and Twitter, as well as article searches in OvidSP databases, Pubmed and EBSCO databases. A Google account is preferred but not essential; participants will sign up in class
