The Coding Certificate Program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to classify medical data from inpatient, outpatient and physician office records. Changes in reimbursement methods and an increased demand to report coded data to insurance companies has made coding a skill in high demand in all health care settings. Coded data is also critical to medical research, medical and allied health education as well as planning and monitoring public health. The current shortage of qualified coders has resulted in many perks on the job that may including flexible hours, sign on bonuses, and the potential to work from home. In addition consulting and travel opportunities are abundant.
Students are required to have completed 16 college credits in the courses noted below as prerequisites with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75. Upon entry into the program, students will study disease pathology and the format and content of health records. Students completing this program will possess an in-depth knowledge of the ICD-9-CM coding system and CPT coding as well as reimbursement systems. The final course provides the student with hands on coding experience. The detailed curriculum is listed below.
