Curriculum

FIRST FALL SEMESTER

BINF 3125 Development & Retention (4 cr.) – A comprehensive study of the structure and content, technical evaluation and completion, and retention and storage of health records in acute care and non-acute care settings.
BINF 3412 Disease Pathology I (3 cr.)– An in-depth study of disease processes which affect the human body. This course provides a foundation for the body of knowledge necessary for the understanding and interpretation of medical information found in health records and medical information systems.

BINF 3301 Introduction to Coding (3 cr.) - A course designed to introduce the student to concepts of medical coding utilizing classification systems such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). Also included are issues related to reimbursement and compliance with regulatory guidelines.

FIRST SPRING SEMESTER

BINF 3110 Legal Aspects of Health Information (3 cr.) -- aspects of hospital and medical staff organization, release of information and legal actions requiring evidence from documented health information.
BINF 3412 Disease Pathology II (3 cr) - Continuation of BINF 3411 Disease Pathology I.
BINF 3302 Intermediate Coding (3 cr.) - A course designed to increase the depth of knowledge in coding systems with practical applications in International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS).

SECOND FALL SEMESTER

BINF 3303 Advanced Coding (3 cr.) – A course designed to provide the student with advanced concepts in medical coding using classification systems such as in International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS).
BINF 3309 Coding Laboratory (3 cr.)*** – A course designed to provide the student with hands on laboratory experience in medical coding using classification systems such as in International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS). This course will be conducted both on campus and at various clinical sites for 15 full day sessions.

* Medical Terminology and Computers in Health Care are offered at UMDNJ-SHRP on a space available basis.
** If Anatomy and Physiology is taken at an insitution which schedules the course as Part I & II, both sections must be completed to meet the prerequisite requirement.
