Students
may register for classes on a part
time basis with the approval of
the Program Director. Students must
complete coursework within 8 semesters
from the initial enrollment, including
the summer semesters. Applicants
to the Medical Laboratory Science
Program, who have completed a NAACLS
accredited Medical Laboratory Technician
Program and have recently passed
an acceptable National Certification
Exam (NCA or ASCP) in the MLT category
(generally within 5 years of enrollment)
are eligible to receive 19 transfer
credits from UMDNJ for the professional
coursework taken in their MLT Program.
In the absence of acceptable certification,
students may receive credit for
Level 1 (MLT) coursework at UMDNJ
through the credit by exam process.
Advanced Placement of MLT graduates
into MLS clinical practice courses
is evaluated on an individual basis.
A request for Credit by Exam for
a particular course must be submitted
in writing to the MLS Program Director
a minimum of one month before the
registration deadline for that course.
Twenty-four
students
are enrolled annually. Graduates
of the Program are eligible for
certifying examinations in the Medical
Technologist category offered by
the American Society for Clinical
Pathology - MT (ASCP) and in the
Clinical Laboratory Scientist category
offered by the National Credentialing
Agency -CLS(NCA). The Program is
fully accredited by the National
Accrediting Agency for Clinical
Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
Graduation Credentials:
Upon
completion of the 44 credits of
professional coursework in Medical
Laboratory Science at UMDNJ, one
of three credentials is conferred
based on the manner in which preprofessional
requirements for general education
and prerequisite basic science coursework
are completed, as follows:
Joint
Baccalaureate Degree: Students
who have completed a minimum of
90 credits of general education
and prerequisite basic science coursework
at one of eleven collaborating NJ
Colleges and Universities are awarded
the Bachelor of Science in Clinical
Laboratory Sciences (BS in CLS)
degree jointly by UMDNJ and the
collaborating institution. This
mechanism must be followed by all
students who will earn the joint
BS in CLS degree as their first
baccalaureate degree. For more information

here.
Second Baccalaureate
Degree: Students
who have completed prerequisite
basic science requirements and have
previously earned a baccalaureate
degree from an accredited US academic
institution are awarded a BS in
CLS degree solely by UMDNJ. In the
special case of students who have
earned a baccalaureate degree from
one of eleven collaborating NJ Colleges
and Universities and who have completed
prerequisite science requirements
at that same institution, a joint
BS in CLS degree is awarded as the
second baccalaureate degree, when
possible.
UMDNJ
Certificate: Students who
have completed prerequisite basic
science requirements and previously
earned a degree from a foreign country
are awarded a Certificate by UMDNJ.
The foreign degree must be evaluated
as equivalent to a US baccalaureate
degree.
