Faculty are responsible for ensuring that their course materials comply with copyright law. Creating links to online resources instead of copying the files is one way of ensuring copyright compliance.
Start with the proxy server prefix
Students who are connecting from off campus, need to be routed through the UMDNJ Libraries proxy server in order to access licensed, UMDNJ restricted journal articles. These journals are identified by the
icon in the UMDNJ databases and UMDNJ Libraries web pages. To route requests through the proxy server, you need to add the following prefix to the beginning of the article's stable link:
http://libproxy.umdnj.edu/login?url=
NOTE: The proxy prefix is only needed for UMDNJ restricted journals. Adding the proxy prefix to non-licensed resources may prevent access.
Add the stable link for the article
This is the tricky part because the url displayed in your browser's address bar is not always stable.
There are a variety of ways to create stable links, depending on the source of the online journal. One way to determine the source is to search for the journal in the UMDNJ Libraries Catalog. The link to the online version of the journal says "Full text available from [specific source]..." If you find the article by searching in a database, you can usually identify the source by looking at the url that displays in your browser's address bar. The first part of the url will usually mention the source. For example, http://www.springerlink.com/content/l56787628012652u/fulltext.pdf comes from Springer.
Once you know the journal source, you can use the instructions below to identify a stable link to the article.
What if your journal source is not on the list?
- Try combining proxy prefix with the url that diplays at the top of the screen. Or...
- Look for the DOI(Digitial Object Identifier) for the article.
Create a link by placing http://libproxy.umdnj.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/ in front of the DOI. The stable url will look like http://libproxy.umdnj.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/es802779y
NOTE: The url created using the DOI sometimes directs people to a choice of sources for the article, not all of which are available to UMDNJ clientele.Specific instructions for journals from common journal sources
URLs and access restrictions fo electronic resources change frequently. Be sure to check links at least once a quarter to make sure they are still functioning.

There are two alternate ways you can create shorter links, but both have issues:
Science Direct recommends using the DOI to create a stable link
- Search for article within the journal
- Click on the article title, NOT the pdf
- Right click on the DOI, located just above the article title, and copy the shortcut
- Paste the shortcut into your application, adding it to the UMDNJ proxy server prefix: http://libproxy.umdnj.edu/login?url=
The stable url will look like this:
http://libproxy.umdnj.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.asr.2008.04.003
When students follow the link you construct, they are sometimes asked to "Select a website below to get this article." When they get this message, they should be instructed to choose ScienceDirect. As an alternative, you can use the ScienceDirect email function to create a url for you.
- Navigate to the html version of the article
- Select the E-mail Article link on the right hand side of the page
- Complete the form, sending the email message to yourself as plain text.. The email message that arrives will include the article's citation plus a stable link.
- Add the url to the UMDNJ proxy server prefix: http://libproxy.umdnj.edu/login?url=
