International Travel

UMDNJ Office of Risk & Claims Management

International SOS Travel Services
UMDNJ students, faculty, and staff frequently travel abroad for University related purposes including study, research, training, program development and business. International travel can pose significant health and safety risks, and for this reason, Risk Management encourages travelers to carefully plan for trips prior to their departure. Preparation for travel should take into consideration government warnings, University policies, health insurance including medical and security evacuation, immunization recommendations, and country specific requirements. All student travel must be approved by the appropriate dean’s office

In addition, students must carefully review and comply with all University policy requirements regarding travel. These requirements are outlined in the policy, “Students Participating in Educational Activities outside UMDNJ or Any of its Affiliates. This policy is available at http://www.umdnj.edu/oppmweb/university_policies/student_affairs/PDF/00-01-25-55_00.pdf

With the well being of international travelers as a top priority, UMDNJ contracts with International SOS (ISOS) to provide travel assistance services for the University community when traveling abroad on University approved activities. ISOS provides security and medical evacuation services, and a variety of online health, safety, and security resources.

You need to enroll; coverage is available if approved by the appropriate UMDNJ official for all students, faculty, and staff traveling abroad.  While abroad, if an emergency arises, the Philadelphia Center, (1-800-523-6586 or 1-215-942-8226) is your primary contact, but any of the 24/7 ISOS Alarm Centers can assist you immediately during an emergency and will notify UMDNJ of your situation.

Membership cards should be carried at all times when traveling. If you misplace or lose your membership card and need to obtain a new card, contact your school’s Student Affairs Office, obtain the membership number, login into the UMDNJ International SOS portal below and print a copy.

We encourage you to review the list of program services by ISOS. Please be aware that some of ISOS's services carry additional charges for which the traveler is personally responsible.  If you request a service which has an additional charge, SOS will inform you in advance and will require a credit card number in order to activate the service.

The ISOS website also provides an online Personal Locator form for inputting travel and destination information. It is required that all travelers complete this form so that your itinerary and other information can be accessed by International SOS or UMDNJ University on-call staff should you need to be located in the event of an emergency.

Health Insurance
International SOS is NOT health insurance.  UMDNJ University encourages all faculty, staff, and students traveling abroad to maintain appropriate health insurance.  Prior to traveling, you should check with your insurance carrier to determine what medical services are covered abroad. Health insurance coverage available through the university can be found at the Human Resource Benefits Office.

ISOS will assist you in obtaining the best medical care available locally or, if necessary, make arrangements for you to return home to receive appropriate medical attention.  In most instances, medical expenses incurred abroad will have to be paid out of pocket and reimbursement sought later from the insurance carrier. If you are unable to arrange for payment of medical expenses at the time of service, ISOS may contact UMDNJ to guarantee payment of costs associated with your care.  Any expenses paid by the university on your behalf must be reimbursed and will be billed to you at a later date.
