RutgRadiology
Welcome to the home page of the Departmentof Radiology. Our educational mission is to provide opportunities and guidancein all dimensions of Diagnostic Radiology so that at the completion oftraining, a resident will become a confident, competent, and compassionatephysician with expertise in our specialty. The two primary teaching sitesare University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, and the East Orange VA MedicalCenter, located approximately two and one half miles away. These are supplementedby a rotation at a Woman's Diagnostic Center in Englewood, New Jersey, staffed exclusively by our faculty and a six week rotation at the ArmedForces Institute of Pathology. This comprehensive and multifaceted experienceprovides thorough grounding in both cognitive and procedural instruction. Our training facilities encompass more than 230,000 examinations a yearcovering a vast range of pathology. It is a truism that if you read abouta disease entity in a book you will also see at least one example of itduring your four years with us.

The hallmark of our program is one-to-onelearning at the view box, by the fluoroscopy table and in the angiographysuite. No rotation involves more than two residents and, even then, eachtrainee has differing tasks. This intensive teacher to mentor relationshipis supplemented by extensive conferences which average two per day. Residentsare prepared in a programmatic fashion emphasizing increasing responsibilitymeasured by advancing knowledge and experience. At the conclusion of theirtraining interval, our graduating residents can function as independentdecision-makers capable of performing, by themselves, most angiography, interventive and uItrasonography procedures. They will also be capableof interpreting cross sectional imaging studies of the head and the bodyas generated by MR, CT and ultrasonography. Moreover, our residents receivea thorough grounding in all the components of conventional radiology, anarea of training that has become neglected in some institutions. Our mainteaching facility is University Hospital situated on the New Jersey MedicalSchool campus in Newark. This is a tertiary care center with demonstratedexcellence in a range of areas including neurosurgery and liver transplantation.University Hospital is also a Level 1 trauma center, the home base of theNorth Star Helicopter System, and the busiest emergency department in northernNew Jersey. Our department contains state-of-the-art equipment with angiography,CT and MR suites each less than two years old. At University Hospital wedo approximately 160,000 examinations per year and the range of pathologyis vast.

We also serve the East Orange VA MedicalFacility which is staffed by attending Radiologists who work at both institutions. The East Orange V.A. Radiology Department also contains up-to date equipmentin all imaging modalities. The department is currently engaged in a multimilliondollar acquisition of a PACS network. Furthermore, we have also begun ateleradiology program linking the two hospital facilities. We are developingopportunities for remote viewing of images sent to us from abroad.

An important feature of our programis that because we have no fellows, there is no deflection of interestaway from resident education. It is our intention, moreover, to prepareyou for a career in either private practice or academic radiology. Hence, there is strong encouragement for participation in clinical research. Lastyear our trainees were first or co-authors in 40 published papers in peerreviewed journals, a ratio which is the highest output per resident ofany program in the country. This was accomplished by congenial interactionsbetween resident and attending physicians. The high number of publicationsas well as the frequent participation of our residents as presenters atnational meetings is a direct result of an atmosphere of intellectual excitementwhich I believe pervades the program. Incidentally, only a few of our residentshave made contributions to the literature before the start of their firstyear with us. The rest initiated their productivity under our faculty'smentorship. This is further affirmation of the fact that research is notnecessarily an innate talent, rather it blossoms in a stimulating environment.

All of our residents are expected toattend the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology's six week course. Provisionis made for transportation and housing in Washington. Residents are alsoallotted time to attend board review courses. With great success, we haverecently initiated both a written and oral board review course on our campus.Opportunities for presentation in national meetings flow directly fromparticipation in research. All expenses for the presentation of papersand abstracts are paid for by department funds to assist residents in theirgrowth and development as clinical investigators.

The quality of our residency has becomeknown both nationally and internationally. Many of our faculty enjoy excellentreputations as teachers and investigators. Our residents have done extremelywell on both the written and oral examinations in the past few years. Furthermore, our residents have competed successfully for fellowships and later forpositions both in private practice and academic medicine. For example,in the last two years, each of our residents has been accepted at prestigiousfellowship programs.
