  1. 1-st Colloque Internationale - Traumatisme Psychique (Psychic Trama): "Stratégie du prise en charge et prévention (Strategy for Intervention and Prevention)" April 13-14, 2009: Setif, Algeria

Event
#1
Detail:

Official languages: French and Arabic.

About:

The Arizona Telemedicine Program is a multidisciplinary clinical program of The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. The program was created in 1996 at the initiation of the Arizona legislature to establish pilot projects demonstrating the efficacy of telemedicine in delivering better health care to Arizona's medically underserved rural areas.

Specifically, the Arizona legislature funded an eight site Arizona Rural Telemedicine Network as a general appropriation to The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center's operating budget. The Arizona legislature defines telemedicine as the use of computers, video imaging, fiber optics and telecommunications for diagnosis and treatment of persons in rural, geographically isolated communities and state institutions.

The program's goals are to demonstrate how telemedicine can improve rural health care in Arizona, particularly with the rising costs of health care leading to closure of critically needed hospitals and clinics in rural Arizona communities, and to offer a cost-effective alternative to expensive transportation and time delays for outside referrals from Arizona Department of Corrections institutions.

Mental Health Film Series - Frames of Mind
(You can consult the meeting's Web pages.)

August 20, 2008

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Sponsor: University of British Columbia [UBC], Department of Psychiatry

"High Anxiety " (1978, directed by Mel Brooks)

Assuming the post of Chief of Staff at the Psycho-Neurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous, Nobel Prize-winning psychiatrist Dr Richard Thorndyke comes across evidence of embezzlement and unexplained disappearances. He's hustled off to a psychiatric convention by scheming Nurse Diesel, she of the impossibly pointy breasts and Teutonic moustache, and her snivelling sidekick Dr. Montague, who has a predilection for S-M. While Thorndyke falls madly for blonde bombshell Victoria, whose wealthy father is being held against his will at the Institute, dastardly Diesel and Montague succeed in framing their new Chief of Staff for murder. To prove his innocence, Thorndyke must confront his own "high anxiety"—acrophobia, the fear of heights—in a vertiginous climax. The film makes merry mocking the psychiatric profession and its practices in this marvellous spoof of Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound. The film contains a wealth of references to other Hitchcock works as well (Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Dial M for Murder); much of the silly fun is in trying to spot them. Hitchcock (to whom High Anxiety is dedicated) reputedly loved the film, and is said to have sent Brooks a case of wine as a thank you.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder [FASD] is a window through which to view the state of our world. While it has a profound impact on individuals, families and all aspects of society, it is also a stimulus for change. This international conference will provide a forum to discuss and examine current research, policy and practice that will assist parents, caregivers, service systems and governments as they strive to prevent FASD and to provide a range of supports for people living with it. About:

Contributing to the interdisciplinary approach in teaching and research at the University of California at Davis [UC Davis] Center for Neuroscience are Center faculty members, students, and collaborators who represent 13 academic departments and sections on the main campus and a number of other sites. These sites include the California Regional Primate Research Center, UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, the Veterans Administration Health Care System Outpatient Clinic in Martinez, other hospitals in northern California, and other universities worldwide.

Research at the Center is diverse, covering the major sub-disciplines and techniques in neuroscience and ranges from cellular and molecular neurobiology through systems and developmental neuroscience to studies of human perception, attention, memory, language, and the nature of consciousness. The Center places special emphasis on sensory physiology, on the molecular-genetic basis of neuronal function and its development, on the search for genetic markers in psychiatric diseases, in addition combining information obtained from different brain-imaging techniques, including fMRI, and ERPs, for the study of human cognition and the development of improved methods to treat brain injury and disease.

Specialized programs include cognitive-behavioral, group, family and couple psychotherapy. Evaluations are often multidisciplinary and may include psychiatric assessment, psychological testing, family or educational assessment, speech and language evaluation, or complete medical assessment.

Psychiatry faculty members engage in a wide variety of research programs, including inquiries into clinical processes; the causes, cures and neuropsychology of major psychiatric disorders; quality of care; medical education; and child and forensic psychiatry. Other topics under investigation include the nature and process of psychotherapy and ways in which "telemedicine" electronic telecommunications networks can be used to extend psychiatric care to rural and constrained patients.
