Objectives:

• Exchange the latest advances in research and facilitate the application of these findings to clinical practice

• Promote educational programs to effectively disseminate new research findings related to schizophrenia, both in the scientific community and the lay public

• Increase the public understanding of the personal, familial and societal impact of schizophrenia
• Support increased research funding for schizophrenia research around the world
• Promote the highest scientific and ethical standards in research and its application in clinical psychiatric practice

The official publication of SIRS is Schizophrenia Research.

The main activities of SCARF are:

• Care and rehabilitation of mentally ill and disabled
• Research
• Training
• Improving awareness about mental illness

Objectives:

• Provide help for individuals and families affected by schizophrenia
• Encourage and support research in schizophrenia
• Initiate public education programs which raise the level of public awareness about schizophrenia
• Influence mental health care facilities to provide the proper in-hospital care, as well as continuing care in the community for people dealing with schizophrenia; and
• Stimulate public support for adequate community residential, employment and recreational activities

Purposes are to:

• Help restore dignity and sense of purpose for persons who are working for recovery from schizophrenia or related disorders
• Offer fellowship, positive support, and companionship in order to achieve good mental health
• Improve our own attitudes about our lives and our illness
• Provide members with the latest information regarding schizophrenia
• Encourage members to take positive steps towards recovery from the illness

Joanne Verbanic started the first US Schizophrenics Anonymous group in Michigan in 1985. There are now over seventy such groups spread across North and South America offering fellowship, support and information. Focus is on recovery, using a 6-step program. The groups have weekly meetings, guest speakers, phone networks, and often a newsletter.

• Strengthen the profession of school social work by maintaining and increasing the number of school social workers employed by local education agencies across the nation
• Offer opportunities for ongoing professional development
• Open nationwide channels of communication and information sharing
• Respond in a timely and efficient manner to the changing needs of school social workers
• Influence public policy and educational issues
• Demonstrate school social workers' effectiveness through evaluation and research
• Assist school social workers in creating linkages among home, school and community on behalf of students and their families
• Mentor persons providing school social work services to achieve the highest professional standards
