Fletcher Allen's experience with two-way interactive videoconferencing began in 1968 by linking nine hospitals in Vermont and New Hampshire via a microwave transmission system. The Interact system was operational through 1985.  In 1994 their telemedicine program evolved to a higher level with the implementation of a pathology network which linked three hospitals via T-1 lines. At the same time Fletcher Allen was experimenting with desktop videoconferencing systems and, by 1995, had established a regional telemedicine network which currently includes 15 sites in Vermont and upstate New York.  Fletcher Allen's Medical Center Hospital of Vermont campus is a major tertiary and primary care facility with more than 800,000 patient visits per year in clinics, hospital settings, and physician offices. Telemedicine is a small part of the larger plan for Fletcher Allen to provide a communications network for the exchange of medical information across Vermont and upper New York State.

Through the expertise of its faculty of attorneys, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, the Institute brings an integrated approach to a wide variety of interdisciplinary programs pertinent to mental health practice, social policy, and the law. At the University of Virginia, the Institute is affiliated with the School of Law, the School of Medicine, the Department of Psychology in the School of Arts and Sciences, and the Curry School of Education programs in Clinical Psychology and School Psychology.

The mission of the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy is to:

• Understand, assess, prevent, and manage violence in society, with particular emphasis on violence among people with mental disorders
• Promote human rights by developing and strengthening the ethical and legal foundations of the rights of persons who have or are perceived to have mental illnesses and disabilities
• Improve law and policy by developing and shaping laws and public policies related to mental health and human development, including, for example, civil commitment, legal responsibility, competence, surrogate decision- making, confidentiality, child protection, and substance abuse
• Provide better information to the courts by improving the capacity of mental health disciplines to provide sound, reliable clinical and scientific information to civil and criminal courts, and assisting courts to make informed decisions

Current research includes work on sexed subjectivities, children and cyberspace, subjectivity, gender and class in a changed international landscape, poststructuralism, psychology and the media, body-mapping, spirituality and psychology, madness and breakdown, youth culture, new feminisms, sexuality and desire, gender and health.

MIM operates the Lithium Information Center, founded in 1975, which collects, organizes and disseminates information about the biomedical uses of lithium and other treatments for bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder. Currently the Center has more than 28,000 references on file.
