Event
List:

  1. Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia in Children and Adolescents: "Diagnostic and Treatment Issues" January 24, 2009: Miami, FL

Event
#1
Detail:

Bipolar disorder and other related psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia are debilitating illnesses that affect individuals across all ages. Specific diagnostic and treatment challenges exist in children and adolescents with these psychiatric conditions. Diagnostically, these conditions may pose greater treatment challenges as they are often associated with other psychiatric comorbidities, severe disease, and treatment resistance. Considering the potential lifelong disability associated with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, it is essential to perform a thorough diagnostic evaluation. Treatment of these conditions often involves a multi-modal approach including psychoeducation, family and supportive psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy.

Objectives:

  • Describe the neuropharmacologic basis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia as related to current and novel drug therapies
  • Summarize the multi-modality approach to treating childhood and adolescent bipolar disorder and schizophrenia
  • Identify clinical treatment options for childhood and adolescent bipolar disorder taking into account symptom presentation, presence of comorbid diagnosis, drug efficacy, adverse effects, drug-drug interactions, and data from current clinical studies
  • Discuss the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of early-onset schizophrenia-spectrum [EOSS] disorders
  • Integrate and summarize existing guidelines in optimizing pharmacotherapy, including monitoring and treating for potential complications
