From the Desk of the President

New Sr. VP for Ethics & Compliance

William F. Owen, Jr., MD
President, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

It is my pleasure to announce that Daniel J. Walsh will join UMDNJ as Senior Vice President/Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, beginning on September 30. Our national search for a new vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer led us to an individual whose extensive experience in corporate ethics and compliance mark him as one of the international leaders in this field. Under his guidance, I am confident we will continue to strengthen the culture of integrity and accountability that is now a standard against which we are all measured.

Mr. Walsh brings significant and distinguished experience to his new role. Prior to coming to UMDNJ, he was the executive vice president, chief ethics and compliance officer and chief audit executive for Cardinal Health, of Columbus, Ohio, a Fortune 20 company and a leading global provider of health-care products and services. At Cardinal Health, he established that company’s first ethics and compliance program and its first enterprise risk management program. Before joining Cardinal Health, Mr. Walsh was the vice president and chief compliance officer for Scientific-Atlanta and was the vice president of audit and compliance at Smiths Group, PLC.

Although he comes to us from Ohio most recently, Mr. Walsh is certainly familiar with this area. He received his undergraduate degree from Queens College of New York and earned his MBA at St. John’s University, also in New York.

As UMDNJ’s Vice President/Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, Mr. Walsh will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the program including developing and delivering ethics and compliance training; coordinating appropriate monitoring and auditing of compliance functions at the schools and units through a network of local compliance officers; assessing and monitoring compliance with privacy security requirements; performing compliance risk assessments and conducting compliance investigations.

At this time, I would also like to sincerely thank Mr. Neil Schorr who has ably and admirably served in this role on an interim basis. We are deeply grateful for his dedicated service to UMDNJ.

William F. Owen, Jr., M.D.
President
