Message from President Owen on LCME Accreditation

William F. Owen, Jr., MD
President, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

Message from President Owen on LCME Accreditation Several months ago, it was with great pride that I announced the decision by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education to reaffirm UMDNJ’s accreditation. Today, we can celebrate yet another milestone in our university’s steady progress in accelerating our success. I am pleased to inform you that we have received official notification that the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) has reaffirmed UMDNJ’s accreditation.

Accreditation by the LCME is required for schools to receive federal grants for medical education and to participate in federal loan programs. Medical students must attend an LCME accredited school to be eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Additionally, most state boards of licensure require that allopathic medical schools in the U.S. be accredited by the LCME as a condition for licensure of their graduates.

The LCME decision is another acknowledgement of the efforts by our faculty, administration, deans, and Board of Trustees. Our ability to achieve these milestones reflects the remarkable dedication and commitment of everyone here at UMDNJ to the values that compel us in our pursuit of excellence in education, healthcare, research and community service.

Again, thank you and congratulations!

William F. Owen, Jr., M.D.
President
