WWW Policy Development Plan

The UMDNJ WWW Publishing Guidelines is a first draft of a policy document for UMDNJ. The only other relevant policy document of which I am aware is the Academic Computing Services UMDnet Account Holder Use Agreement. I do not know whether the scope of UMDNJ's presence on the WWW warrents the development of new policies documents for inclusion in the University Policy Manual.

I have copied (with permission) policy documents from the University of Minnesota that I feel are worth emulating here. The UM Policy Statement makes clear the usefulness of the WWW and encourages folks to use it as a medium to disseminate and exchange information while making clear limitations imposed by copyright and other laws.

The UMDNJ WWW Publishing Guidelines mentioned above is based on the University of Minnesota WWW Publishing Guidelines. As the name suggest, this document is a series of required and recommended policies to be followed for every web document produced. Some of the points appear driven by political motives, others by stylistic ones.

The University of Minnesota also has an on-line form that folks may use to request a link from the UM web site to an official web document maintained by a department or official organization. Another UM campus has another form (not interactive, unfortuately) that folks can use to request links be made to personal web pages.

Finally, UM has made clear its policy regarding the appropriate use of the university logo (or wordmark ) on WWW documents.

I propose the Webcom member continue to survey relevant policy materials at other University web sites and enhance the UMDNJ policy draft above so that it becomes a concise and easy to understand statment of policy.
