SUMMARY UMDNJ POLICY ON POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEES
Overview
Postdoctoral appointees are critical to the success of
the UMDNJ research goals and their contribution to UMDNJ's
research is highly valued. The University supports its post-doctoral
appointees and believes they should be offered compensation,
benefits and an academic environment commensurate with their
training and abilities. Toward that end, the UMDNJ Policy
for Postdoctoral Fellows was revised October 2002. The
major points are listed below. For the complete policy go
to: UMDNJ
Policy on Postdoctoral Appointees.
-
Because the term "fellow" is used to describe a variety of positions,
the designation of Postdoctoral Appointee is used in place of
Postdoctoral Fellow. This remains a full time position for
individuals who have recently earned a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctoral
degree, and who join the University for a limited time to continue
advanced research training under the supervision of a member of the
faculty. The maximum time at UMDNJ is four years, with a total
allowable postdoctoral experience of six years.
-
All newly appointed Postdoctoral Appointees must receive financial
support no lower than the
current NIH NRSA support appropriate to the
relevant years of experience. To enable faculty to prepare for changes
in NIH stipend scales, the new scales will not be implemented until the
following July 1.
-
Annual salary increases for Postdoctoral Appointees
should at least equal the next NRSA step for years of
relevant experience based on the
salary scale in effect when the appointment was made. Principal
Investigators with grants funded prior to July 1, 2003,
may limit the increase to 6% if the next NRSA step is
greater than that amount.
-
The content of the Letter of Appointment is defined
and a sample is appended.
-
Benefits are specified,
and include a University-sponsored group health plan, term life insurance,
up to 15 days of sick leave per year, one day accrued
paid vacation per calendar month of appointment, and up
to six weeks new child leave (which includes vacation
and sick time) with full pay.
-
Each Postdoctoral Appointee shall receive an
annual written evaluation of academic progress,
with a copy submitted to the Office of Postdoctoral
Affairs. No specific form is required, but a
sample generic
Performance Assessment Form is provided by the
OPA.
-
Statements regarding Mediation Services, Resignation,
Termination, Obligations of the Mentor and Obligations
of the Postdoctoral Appointee. The University has established an
Ombudsman
policy to address grievances.
Additional Benefits not in the UMDNJ Policy
- Postdoctoral Appointees are eligible for membership
in the New York Academy of Sciences without cost for their
first year.
- Postdoctoral Appointees may attend graduate courses
at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
according
to the following policy.
