- UMDNJ POSTDOCTORAL HEALTH/DENTAL INSURANCE -

UNIVERSITY HEALTH PLANS

Health Insurance

All Postdoctoral Appointees are required to have health insurance and to participate in the comprehensive insurance plan offered through the University. The 2007 health plan was developed especially for UMDNJ Postdoctoral Appointees and Rutgers University Graduate Fellows. It is underwritten by Aetna Life Insurance Company and administered by the Chickering Group and University Health Plans, Inc. (Quincy, MA). The premium for the individual plan will be paid by your mentor or department. Dependent coverage is the responsibility of the postdoctoral appointee, although your mentor or department may, at its discretion, pay for this portion of the premium also.

Note to the PI: Insurance premiums will not terminate automatically when the postdoc leaves. You must notify Risk and Claims. A discontinuation form is available at the top of this page for your convenience.

The Aetna Plan is an 'Open Choice PPO Plan' and you are not required to select a Primary Care Physician. There are two levels of benefits: "in-network" and "out-of-network." Aetna has one of the largest networks of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare providers in the United States. To receive the highest level of insurance benefit, simply choose an Aetna participating provider.

For detailed information, log onto http://www.universityhealthplans.com, select the UMDNJ Postdoctoral Fellows option and then the Health Insurance option. A summary of benefits and an on-line participating provider listing is available and their detailed brochure can be downloaded. To find a provider, click 'Find a Provider,' choose the appropriate provider category and select 'Open Choice PPO.' Again, you are not required to select a primary care physician, but you get the highest level of benefit by selecting participating providers.

If you have any questions regarding claims, ID cards or related issues, contact the Chickering Group at 1-800-466-3185. Detailed contact information on other issues is available in the on-line brochure.

As with most large insurance plans, occasional mistakes in billing and other services may occur. Therefore, it is important that you follow procedures carefully. Advice to avoid and resolve problems includes the following:

  • Before seeking any non-emergency service, ensure that the physician and service is covered by the plan. Not all lab tests and procedures are covered, so your physician or you should first contact the insurance company if there is any doubt.

  • Keep accurate records of all phone contacts, including the time and date you called and the name of the person with whom you spoke. If you reached voice mail, make a note of the name of the individual with whom you left a message. Be certain that you leave a return phone number where you can be reached.

  • Questions may best be answered by e-mail by selecting the appropriate option from the University Health Plans web site. This also gives you a record of the correspondence.

Post-Completion Coverage

Postdoctoral Appointees are defined as students and therefore are not eligible for continuation of health insurance under COBRA.

UMDNJ students and postdoctoral fellows have the option to obtain individual health insurance coverage through Aetna after they graduate/complete their training at UMDNJ. Please note that this plan (the Individual Advantage Plan) is not the same as the Aetna student or postdoctoral fellow plan. Instead, it is a traditional HMO plan and the availability of coverage is dependent upon the state in which the student resides following graduation/completion. (it is possible that this Aetna plan is not available in every state.) This plan has no relationship to the current UMDNJ student and postdoctoral plans; it is a different, separate plan.

For students residing in New Jersey, the current monthly premiums for the Individual Advantage Plan can be obtained at the following link:
New Jersey- Individual Advantage Plan

Co-pay amounts for hospitalization and emergency room visits vary according to the plan selected. Students should consult the enrollment packet for specific information.

Students and postdoctoral fellows should request from Aetna an information packet for enrollment in the post-graduation plan six to eight weeks in advance of the end of their current coverage. Enrollment forms received by Aetna by the 15th of the month will be effective the 1st of the following month. To avoid pre-existing condition exclusions, the Individual Advantage Plan must take effect on the termination date of the current Aetna student or postdoctoral fellow plan. Students who have waived out of the Aetna student plan can also apply for coverage under the Individual Advantage Plan at the same premiums.

For more information, contact the Aetna Individual Advantage Plan at 800-437-6448 (ext. 12).

Alternatively, temporary coverage can be obtained by purchasing the Horizon Blue individual health insurarance plan. Contact Horizon Blue at 1-800-224-1234 for information.

Life Insurance

Mandatory term life insurance ($20,000) is provided by the Guardian Insurance Company. The cost is $18.00 billed semi-annually. As with health insurance, this is paid by your mentor.

Dental Insurance

UMDNJ will offer its students, postdocs, and their dependents a dental insurance plan, DeltaCare, effective January 1, 2003. Students may enroll in this plan on a voluntary basis; it is not required insurance.

Students interested in participating should enroll on-line through University Health Plans (Quincy, Mass.). The on-line enrollment form, plan benefit highlights and a list of network dentists can be found by linking to www.universityhealthplans.com . Once on the web site, click "University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey", and then click "Dental." (Please note that Cumberland County is out of place and the Essex County listing continues.)

July 15, 2008 is the enrollment deadline for coverage from August 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009. Deadlines of August 15, 2008 and September 15, 2008 have been established as well for September 1 and October 1 effective dates respectively. (The premium will not be pro-rated for the September and October effective dates.)

As part of the enrollment process, you must select a DeltaCare participating dentist. The enrollment form will not be accepted without this selection. UMDNJ has worked closely with DeltaCare to enroll many of our dental facilities and providers statewide in the DeltaCare Network. The web site includes a complete, up-to-date list of participating providers.

Students with questions regarding the enrollment process should contact University Health Plans via email at info@univhealthplans.com or at 800-437-6448.
