NJ DRIVERS LICENSE
This is an update regarding the procedures for non immigrant visa
holders when applying for New Jersey driver's licenses. According to
Motor Vehicle Services (MVS) in Trenton, an applicant's visa has to be
valid for at least one year in order to apply for a driver's license. MVS
will go by the expiration date on an I 20 or an IAP 66 for determining
whether an individual has permission to stay a year or more. It is
suggested that students and scholars should apply for a license early in
their stay if they think they will need one. It appears that those who
have not applied early on in their program and whose sponsorship will end
in less than a year may have a problem.
If you encounter specific problems that cannot be resolved, please
notify Ms. Yocasta Brens-Watson in the Office of International Services
(973-972-6138) for assistance.
