Academics verses Industry - What's the Scoop?
Friday, May 9, 2003, Noon
Research Tower, Dean's Conference Room, Room 123/124, Piscataway
On Friday, May 9th, 2003, Drs. Roberto Weinmann (Bristol-Myers Squibb),
Tai Wai Wong (Bristol-Myers Squibb) and Leigh Zawel (Novartis) will discuss
the issue of Academics verses Industry as part of the monthly postdoc luncheon
seminar series.
They will share with you, in an informal
manner, their evaluations and experiences of the differences and similarties
between academics and pharmaceutical
companies with respect to research. Drs. Weinmann and Wong attained independent
research positions in academia and then transferred to Bristol-Meyers
Squibb. They were at different levels in their careers when they did so.
Dr. Zawel
performed a stellar postdoc stint and decided to go to a company immediately.
So, they represent a range in "academic maturity" and can present the "low-down" on
the current state of affairs in companies.
They are three affable, honest, and approchable people. Ask them all the
questions that have passed through your mind regarding these two research
environments. This is an opportunity to really gain a sense, at least from
their perspectives, of how academics and industry compare on a day-to-day
basis. The session will meet in the Dean's Conference Room, as always, at
noon, with lunch. For postdocs not on the Piscataway/NB campus, please confirm
your attendence with Dr. Lynne Vales.
Career Development Workshop
On Thursday, March 27, 2003, 9:30-11:30 am, the UMDNJ
Office of Postdoctoral Affairs will sponsor a nationally renowned workshop
by Peter Fiske, Ph.D. addressing practical considerations for various
career goals of postdoctoral appointees and doctoral candidates. Dr. Fiske
will host a two-hour career workshop built around his widely popular book, Put
Your Science to Work: The Take-charge Career Guide for Scientists. The
workshop will be held in Newark at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, lecture
hall MSB-B556 (185
South Orange Ave - Directions). A light breakfast will be available from
8:30-9:30 am during registration.
In this two-hour workshop, Dr. Fiske
will present a thorough and practical overview to the process of career
planning and job hunting from the perspective
of a young scientist. He covers specific steps that young scientists
can take to broaden their horizons, strengthen their skills, and present
their
best face to potential employers. An important part of this is the realization
that most young scientists possess a range of valuable "transferable skills" that
are highly sought after by employers in and out of science. The workshop
also covers the specifics of job hunting, including informational interviewing,
building your network, developing a compelling CV and resume, cover letters,
interviewing, and more.
To register for this event, UMDNJ graduate students,
postdocs or faculty should send send e-mail to the Office
of Postdoctoral Affairs indicating
your name, title, campus, and whether you will require shuttle bus transportation
from the Piscataway campus to Newark. It is anticipated that the bus
will leave from RWJMS at 8:00 am and leave Newark at 12:30 pm.
The workshop is being supported in part by the Foundation of UMDNJ through
a generous award to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
