| The purpose of this training is to provide healthcare professionals with comprehensive information on the prevention, control, and management of TB in public health settings. Topics will include epidemiology and surveillance, application of diagnostic methods, case management, infection control, contact investigation, cultural competency, legal interventions, and program evaluation. Aspects of assessing performance in TB control activities will also be covered. The format includes lectures, discussions, small group work, and case studies. |
| This workshop is designed for healthcare professionals such as, nurses, disease investigators, outreach staff, and physicians who are involved in management and follow up of TB patients. Some information on supervision and program administration will also be covered, benefitting staff in health department leadership positions. |
| As the incidence of tuberculosis continues to decline, maintaining public health expertise in TB is particularly challenging. Therefore, ongoing training and education are important for healthcare providers so they can develop and enhance skills in the best practices and guidelines for TB prevention and control and interact effectively with public health agencies. This type of training is also important for new clinicians working in TB control or other settings. |

At the conclusion of this activity the target audience will be able to:
- Apply TB surveillance data to program management and evaluation in order to improve patient and program objectives
- Apply principles of TB case management services to improve patient adherence and continuity of care
- Describe laboratory techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of TB in order to adjust medication regimens and appropriately treat TB patients and contacts
- Use genotyping results to identify false-positive cultures, distinguish between re-activation and re-infection and identify outbreaks in order to focus and prioritize TB control efforts
- Apply principles of TB transmission to facility management and supervision of contact investigations so that the spread of TB to the greater community may be prevented
- Administer legal interventions to TB patients as a last resort and in an appropriate manner to protect the health of the public
- Define cultural competency in the context of TB programs so that staff may engage TB patients in a sensitive, individualized manner
- Evaluate aspects of a TB program in order to improve quality and outcomes which are defined by state and local standards of care
- Fill gaps in standards of care through tailored training activities in order to improve patient outcomes

This course will build upon the basic concepts outlined in the CDC’s Self Study Modules on Tuberculosis 1-5 (Available at: http://www.cdc.gov/tb/education/ssmodules/default.htm). Therefore, it is mandatory that participants review this self study guide prior to the course. The test which follows should be completed for Modules 1-5 and certificate printed and sent in prior to attendance. In addition, in order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits and/or a certificate of participation, participants are required to attend the entire course, and complete an evaluation form. A post-course follow up evaluation will be sent within 2 months of the course.
