UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School - Neurological Institute of New Jersey

Dr. Peter W. Carmel, Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) - and a Professor of Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark is an internationally renowned pediatric neurosurgeon.

Dr. Carmel has published frequently on brain tumors and congenital malformations in both children and adults. Before coming to the UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School, he was Professor of Neurological Surgery and Director of Pediatric Neurological Surgery at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York. He had been on the faculty of Columbia University and an Attending Neurosurgeon at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center since 1967.

Dr. Carmel became Chief of then Division of Neurological Surgery in October 1994. A new residency program was founded and approved by the Residcency Review Committee in Neurological Surgery. On July 1, 1999 the Division was changed to the Department of Neurological Surgery. Because of new strengths in the Departments of Neuroscience and Neurosurgery the Board of Trustees of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey created the Neurological Institute of New Jersey on November 11, 1999. Dr. Carmel is presently the Co-Medical Director.

Dr. Carmel has lectured extensively on neurological surgery throughout the United States and abroad, including France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Scandinavia, Russia and Mexico.

His research focuses on childhood brain tumors, congenital anomalies of the nervous system, and the structure and function of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. His research into these and other areas has resulted in nearly 80 scientific articles and 25 books and chapters.

Active in several professional organizations, Dr. Carmel has held leadership positions in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the National Coalition for Research in Neurological Diseases and Stroke and the National Foundation for Brain Research. He is the Neurosurgical representative at the American Medical Association's House of Delegates, and is former Chair of the AMA's Council on Long Range Planning. He was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association.

He received his Bachelors of Arts degree from the College of the University of Chicago in 1956, an M.D. degree fro New York University, Bellevue College of Medicine, New York in 1960, and a Doctor of Medical Science degree in neuroanatomy from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1970.

Dr. Carmel has been listed in several physician-selected consumer guides to outstanding physicians, including the recent American Health Magazine survey of the "Best Doctors in America," and the latest edition of the book "The Best Doctors in America," published by Woodward/White.
