COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS NEEDED

Modern technology has created exceptionally sophisticated communication devices.  These systems have enabled patients with ALS to communicate more efficiently and effectively than every before.  As a result, more meaningful interaction with relatives and friends is increasingly possible.
Unfortunately, many patients are unable to take advantage of this sophisticated technology due to the prohibitive cost.  Insurance and managed care companies usually do not pay for such equipment.  To assist our ALS patients, the Neuromuscular & ALS Center at RWJ is establishing a loan program for communication devices.
Anyone wishing to donate a communication system to support this new initiative should contact one of our Speech-Language Pathologists, Christine Bove or Nancy Calamusa at (732) 235-6699.  Donations of medical equipment may be considered tax deductible as charitable gifts-in-kind (consult your tax consultant for specifics).  The RWJ University Hospital Foundation will be happy to advise prospective donors about the deductibility of such gifts.
For further information, contact Mary Bergen, RN, at (732) 235-7331.
