Overview: In response to a growing community need, the UMDNJ/University Hospital Stroke Service began in January 1997. This program was established to optimize the care of stroke patients with early detection and treatment, to provide an educational forum for the community, and to conduct clinical research.
The stroke service provides early intervention for all aspects of stroke
care. All patients who present to the emergency room with the symptoms
of a stroke are evaluated immediately by the stroke team. Therapeutic decisions,
such as whether tPA (a clot-dissolving drug) is to be given, are made rapidly
with the help of the 24 hour CT and MRI availability. Once admitted to
the hospital, the patient is evaluated by the speech, physical, and occupational
therapists, the social worker, and the advanced practice nurse, and the
diagnostic work-up is completed within 24 hours of admission. Weekly interdisciplinary
rounds are conducted to coordinate the different disciplines involved in
the patient's rehabilitation and disposition.
Stroke Prevention Education Programs
are available to the community. Please call R. Doreen Monks, RN,
MSN, at 973-972-0571 for information.
