The Department of Neurosciences is committed to excellence in patient care services, health promotion and disease prevention. The department is involved in both primary and tertiary care activities as demonstrated through the wide range of services at University Hospital, the VA Medical Center and on an as needed/arranged basis at other major affiliates in North Jersey. 
 

The following services/centers are available in suite 4100 of the Doctor's Office Center (DOC) as part of the Comprehensive Neurological Care Center:
 

General Neurology

The Department of Neurosciences provides diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and extended management for a comprehensive range of suspected and confirmed neurological disorders in adults and children.  The department treats patients with diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves or muscles. 
 

Pediatric Neurology

The Pediatric Neurology division provides diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic diseases, including headaches, mental retardation, central nervous system infections, degenerative diseases, seizure disorders, muscle disorders, neonatal complications, trauma, brain tumors, head injury, spina bifida, and neurology of AIDS.  Evaluation of learning disabilities is also available.

Center for Neuromuscular Disorders, Electromyography

The EMG laboratory performs routine and advanced nerve conduction studies and electromyography for neuromuscular disorders and disorders of motor control.

Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis and Treatment Center

The Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis and Treatment Center provides diagnosis and treatment services for patients with known or suspected multiple sclerosis.  Eligible patients may enroll in experimental treatment protocols.

Muscular Dystrophy Center

The Muscular Dystrophy Center is partially supported by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  It provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment for patients with known or suspected neuromuscular diseases.  Congenital, hereditary or acquired muscle disorders, myasthenia gravis and amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are among the disorders treated at the Center.

Neuro-Electro-Diagnostic Laboratories
 

The Neuro-Electro-Diagnostic Laboratory performs routine EEG, sleep studies, and evoked potentials for infants, children and adults.

Neurofibromatosis Center

The Neurofibromatosis (NF) Center treats patients with NF1 and NF2, along with children and adults with other neuro cutaneous disorders (Tuberous Sclerosis, Sturge-Wever, etc.)  The Center's multidisciplinary staff include representation from pediatric and adult neurology, genetics, ophthalmology, and orthopedic surgery.  MRI, EEG and other neuroradiologic tools are available.

Neurooncology Center

The Neurooncology Center provides diagnosis and treatment of patients with known or suspected tumors of the nervous system, including primary and metastatic tumors of the brain and spinal cord.  The Center also provides evaluation and treatment for the neurological complications of systemic cancer.

New Jersey Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia Center

The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia Center consists of a multi-disciplinary group of clinicians and researchers devoted to the understanding and care of CFS and fibromyalgia patients.  the Center's clinical focus is on appropriate diagnostic classification and treatment.  Trials with experimental pharmaceuticals are on-going.  The research wing of the Center is involved in understanding the cause of these disabling illnesses.  Research studies are performed at no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.

New Jersey Comprehensive Epilepsy Center

The Epilepsy Center provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and management of both pediatric and adult patients.  In addition, patients can enroll in drug studies and may be evaluated for epilepsy surgery.

Stroke Center

The Stoke Center integrates multiple disciplines in the care of stroke patients, including cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, nursing, physical speech and occupational therapies, nutrition, and social work services.
