International Dentist Program

  1. Introduction
    The International Dentist Program at the New Jersey Dental School is designed to enable qualified dentists educated outside the United States or Canada to earn a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree following a special twenty-four month didactic and clinical program.

  2. Eligibility
    The NJDS International Dentist Program has been developed for individuals who have completed the equivalent of a DMD or DDS program in a non-US or Canadian accredited dental school. It is intended for individuals who would be interested in pursing a dental career in the US or who would be interested in returning to their country with additional skills acquired in a US accredited DMD program. This program is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, as well as international students.

  3. Admissions requirements
    All applicants are required to file an application with the NJDS Office of Admissions

    This application must include:
  • A completed application with non-refundable application fee of $250 made payable to UMDNJ.(NO CASH ACCEPTED)
  • Documentation of a license to practice dentistry in his/her country, if available.
  • Original or notarized copies of diplomas and all official transcripts from post-secondary schools attended.(Transcripts in languages other than English must be translated and evaluated by a foreign academic credentialing service)
  • National Board Part I and II scores (obtained within the past five years)
  • Submit TOEFL examination score in situations where English is not the applicants native language.
  • A brief personal statement is requested
  • A Curriculum Vitae/Professional Resume

All applicants must submit original documents for Part I and Part II Board scores, TOEFL and translation evaluations.

In addition to the documents listed above, candidates must submit three letters of recommendation preferably from faculty of the candidate’s dental school. Candidates will have to present themselves for a personal two-day interview at the New Jersey Dental School during which a bench test examination will be administered.

Applications should be submitted directly to the New Jersey Dental School’s Office of Admissions. Applications will be accepted throughout the year and will be reviewed and acted upon by the New Jersey Dental School Admissions Committee.

We will be accepting applications starting July 1, 2008 for the entering class of 2009 (rolling admission).  The deadline to apply will be December 1, 2008.  Orientation and classes will begin in May of 2009.

All candidates will be informed in writing of the action taken on their applications. The time for sending acceptance or rejection notices will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

  • If offered admission, applicants are required to submit a nonrefundable tuition deposit of $2000.00.

Please be advised that an offer of admission will not be final and enrollment not permitted until the enrollment certification and criminal background check are completed with results deemed favorable by UMDNJ.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. When does the application process begin?
A. The Office of Admissions will begin accepting applications between July 1st  and December 1st 2008 for the class entering in the spring 2009. It is strongly recommended that applications be submitted as early in the admissions cycle as possible.

Q. Are both the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part I and II required in order to be considered for the New Jersey Dental School International Dentist Program (IDP)?
A. Yes.  All applicants must submit an official score report, demonstrating the successful completetion of both part I and II. An application will not be processed without this information.
 
Q. How will applicants be notified if selected for an interview?
A. Those applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified in writing with all the necessary information concerning the interview process. All candidates are expected to confirm their attendance for the interview.

Q. How many students are enrolled into the International Dentist Program annually?
A. Sixteen individuals are enrolled into the IDP program each year.

Q. What are acceptable forms of proof of receiving a dental degree?
A. Applicants are required to submit a notarized copy of his/her official dental school diploma as proof of receiving a dental degree.

Q. Do I have to be a New Jersey resident and/or a U.S citizen?
A. No. The IDP is open to all qualified international trained dentists.

Q. I was not accepted for the 2008 spring class, might I reapply using my existing application?
A. Yes, you may re-apply using your previous application once. If you would like to initiate this process you will be required to submit the following:

  • A letter or email explaining your intent to apply a second time
  • The application of $250
  • Any new or updated documentation supporting your application

Q. How do I send my official TOEFL scores to New Jersey Dental School
A. All applicants must request official results of the TEST Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to be sent directly to the New Jersey Dental School Office of Admissions. The code for NJDS is 2584

Q. Does NJDS have a minimum required National Board Score for both part I & II and the TOEFL?
A. No, however due to the competitive nature of the application process, applicants with stronger credentials are give preference in the selection process.
