Cancer Center of Excellence (to be completed
July 2004)
When
it comes to cancer, minority groups are not underrepresented.
African-Americans, Latinos, and Asian-Americans are at special
risk to develop certain types of cancer. African-American
men, for example, have almost twice the rate of prostate cancer
as Caucasian men and are twice as likely to die from the disease.
The mission of a new $100 million cancer center being built
on the New Jersey Medical School campus will focus on resolving
some of these disparities. Many minorities live in the counties
that will be served by the new center. Currently, University
Hospital has approximately 30,000 outpatient cancer-related
visits each year.
