Internal Medicine Residency Program Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I submit an application?

A. New Jersey Medical School accepts all applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications submitted in any other form will not be reviewed.

Q.

How many categorical and preliminary positions do you expect to offer?

A. We expect to have 25 categorical and 8 preliminary internal medicine positions next year.

Q. Where will I spend most of my time?

A. The Internal Medicine residency utilizes numerous clinical settings throughout the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School system in order to give our housestaff the most diverse educational experience. Residents will spend time in the following sites: University Hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center and the VA Healthcare System as well as various local community internal medicine teaching practice sites.

Q. What is the call schedule like?

A. Call on regular floor rotations is every fourth night until 7:00 p.m. Floor residents go home and do not stay overnight in the hospital. Call in the intensive care units is every fourth night and if you leave at 1:00 p.m. on every post-call day. Attendings in the Department of Medicine are available at night to assist and teach night float and ICU on call residents.

Q. Will NJMS make sure I have one day off per week?

A. Residents have one day off per week. This is usually a weekday (i.e., precall day off) but occasionally may be a weekend day.

Q. What facilities are available to residents?

A. Just to name a few of the facilities:

Access to computer systems throughout the university and hospital.

Computerized retrieval of labs, radiographic studies, and outpatient records; inpatient computerized system already available at VA; inpatient system expected in July 2004 at University Hospital.

Access to a state-of-the-art library open seven days a week. Full-text journals available on line.

Call Rooms: Residents will have access to private call rooms while taking call on ICU or Night Float rotations. Additionally, meals are provided free of charge for residents on call.

Parking: NJMS parking is available at all affiliated hospitals. We also offer a "pre-tax" payroll deduction for parking expenses.

As University employees, NJMS residents have access to many university facilities (for a fee) including daycare.

All interns receive white coats, with laundry service available.

A.

Moonlighting is permitted for residents in the PGY2 and PGY3 years with the approval of the Dean of Graduate Medical Eduation.

Q. Are there USMLE score requirements?

A. Although scores on USMLE examinations are an important factor in our selection process, there are no official score requirements for applying to our program. We prefer to evaluate each applicant on his or her own individual merits.

A.

Graduates from any medical school are invited to submit applications and will be subject to our usual application procedure. We prefer, however, that graduates of international medical schools be recent graduates (< 3 years), have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status.
