The unique educational experience within Med-Peds is centered within our outpatient continuity clinic where residents are precepted by our med-peds trained faculty. The clinic practice is a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric practice located in the Doctors Office Center, on UMDNJ-Newark campus. The combined practice ensures that while rotating through one specialty the skills of the other remain up-to-date. In this suite there are 4 patient care areas, two offices for discussion of both medically and non-medically related topics, a treatment room where blood can be drawn, vaccines can be administered and patient education can be performed. Functioning as a small group practice, it strives to provide comprehensive primary care to a diverse group of patients. It is one of the most successful outpatient services within both departments that it serves. Patient no-shows are extremely low because of the very personal teamwork approach to care offered to our patients. Most patients know all of the residents and attendings by name. The patient base is divided about evenly between pediatrics and medicine. Our referrals come from the Emergency department, our inpatient rotations, the nursery and the community itself. The advantage of being in a the Doctor's Office Center is that all of the necessary services for referral are located within the building (including subspecialties in both medicine and pediatrics, social work, outpatient radiology connected to a PACS system which can be accessed from the clinic suite, there is even a pharmacy). Clinic attendance
is required once a week in the afternoon during all months except ED and
ICU rotations. A PGY-1 resident will see 3 to 5 patients per half day
session, PGY-2 and 3's will see 5 to 8 patients per half day session and
PGY-4's will see 8 to 10 patients per half day session. A typical clinic
day always includes time devoted to education on disease entities and
treatment strategies, as well as ample time to bond with attendings and
residents within Med-Peds. |
