Spinal Cord Injury: Computer Based Learning |

Development of an interactive instructional computer program on the subject of spinal cord injury. Program attempts to provide the 'feel' of patient/care-giver interaction by utilizing still images and audio instruction; standardized patient cases are presented from which the learner can participate in health care decisions. |
Students in the fourth year rotation in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation use the program to learn spinal injury diagnostic skills by evaluating and determining treatments for a series of cases. The program was included for presentation at the Eighth International Ottawa Conference on Medical Education and Assessment, held in Philadelphia on July 12-15, 1998. This prestigious conference, held for the first time that year in the United States, brings together a broad spectrum of health care professionals and educators for the purpose of examining the latest trends in medical education. A presentation was also made at the UMDNJ IAIMS Symposium 4/22/98. |

CD emphasizes the comprehensive care of patients with multiple chronic and psychosocial conditions. The material demonstrates how the disciplines of medicine, nursing, allied health, public health, dentistry and social work should be applied to these complex cases. |
SOM has incorporated this courseware into a second year geriatric course. Third year students are asked to view the CD-ROM and discuss it with the faculty during geriatric case conference. At SHRP, graduate level nutrition students view, work through and discuss the CD-ROM with faculty in geriatric nutrition, geriatric practice experiences and physical assessment courses. This project uses both learning materials and case studies and includes pre- and post-tests. The project was programmed in Authorware and includes images, video clips and audio. The program has been used to generate funding from additional sources. A presentation was made at the UMDNJ IAIMS Symposium 4/22/98.

The central objective of this project is to establish a relational database of correlated digitized pathology, radiology and relevant clinical data in order to assist students, residents and practicing physicians in learning new strategies for clinical decision-making, and to develop cost-effective and efficient methods for rendering differential diagnoses. |
This is a Web-based project, programmed using CGI, Pearl, Front Page, specialized digitizing and scanning. A number of cases are available live on the Web. CME credits are currently offered and have been taken by students as far away as China and Spain. It is interactive and automatically scores and notifies the site administrator that someone has participated. In addition, residents can review cases and critique them, indicating if they would they have done something different, and determine what the cost differential would have been. Ten residents participated in the initial critique process. There is a separate project in Zhon Shan, China, in Telemedicine. Cases will be submitted from there to enlarge the number of cases that are from Pacific Rim individuals. A presentation was made at UMDNJ IAIMS Symposium 4/22/98. |

Created the course IDST5215 Human Resources Management. The course is a three credit course and utilizes two main instructional methods. The course starts on the Web, then the students gather at a national meeting where they receive a two-day seminar on counseling, providing feedback, and supervision strategies. They are videotaped and given feedback. After the meeting, the students complete the second half of the course online. Staff from UMDNJ's Office of Human Resources teaches the course. The course has been taught twice in the summer; the second round of classes was taught the summer of 2001. |

Create a Web-based multimedia autopsy presentation site using Web-based video servers (WVS) and indexed video databases (IVD). The purpose is to increase the exposure of medical students to autopsy in a curriculum-relevant, clinically-relevant and convenient manner. Starting with gross anatomical images on video, students will be able to link to individual organ dissection, microscopic anatomy and pathology as well as relevant clinical and radiographic images. Assessment will be done with a dynamic quiz bank to measure content comprehension and retention, and a questionnaire tracking the impact of the presentation on attitudes towards autopsy. |

Utilize a virtual reality neurological surgery simulator to teach complex neurosurgical procedures to residents, assist them in preoperative planning, and evaluate the correlations between intraoperative and virtual reality 3D scenarios. The system utilizes CT and MRI scans of the patient in order to create a 3D brain model. The project will also generate a series of educational DVD's demonstrating preoperative planning of select neurosurgical cases. The DVD's will also demonstrate detailed anatomical relationships between the brain lesion and normal structures around it. |
