The Division of Nephrology at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical
School has assumed a leadership position in subspecialty training
since 1951. The training program incorporates clinical experience
and research activities with didactic lectures by the faculty
to provide a strong educational background in the evidence-based
practice of nephrology. Participating institutions in the
two-year fellowship program are University Hospital, East
Orange Veterans Administration Medical Center, and Hackensack
University Hospital.
Requirements:
Three years of approved Internal Medicine Residency, U.S.
citizenship or permanent visa and qualifications for licensure
to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey.
Clinical Experience:
Each of the three hospitals participating in the program
has active hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis programs
and consultation services. The renal transplantation program
is situated in Hackensack where many transplantation operations
are performed each year. Fellows follow patients in house,
at outpatient clinics, hemodialysis units, and act as consultants
under attending supervision. Fellows are also expected to
be actively involved in the teaching of medical students
and residents.
Education:
In addition to daily teaching rounds, there is a weekly
journal club, a semi-monthly combined renal meeting, monthly
transplant rounds as well as physiology, research and hypertension
seminars.
The monthly renal biopsy conference is a cornerstone of
the teaching program. Interactive discussions between faculty,
fellows and renal pathologists provide a stimulating atmosphere
in which fellows are active participants in case presentations
and management decisions.
The division sponsors a Visiting Professor series in which
thought leaders in Nephrology are invited to lecture and
attend clinical rounds.
Research Activities:
- Molecular biology of renin angiotensin system
- Mesangial Cell Survival Pathways
- Iron Metabolism in Hemodialysis Patients Receiving Erythropoietin
- Biochemical Basis of Diabetic Nephropathy
- Immunologic Mechanisms of Renal Disease and Transplantation
- Growth Factors in Diabetic Nephropathy
- Renal Bone Disease
- Low Selenium and Oxidative Stress
