Focus Community
Health Center
FOCUS Community Health Center (FOCUS) is an ambulatory
care facility established by the University of Medicine and
Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS), Department
of Medicine, with financial support from University Hospital
to serve the health care needs of the people of Newark with
special emphasis on culturally competent health care and preventive
services. FOCUS became fully operational in January 1999.
FOCUS addresses the language, cultural, and institutional
barriers that prevent the growing Latino population from obtaining
quality health care. Staffed by Latino faculty and bilingual
health care professionals, FOCUS is rapidly becoming a major
ambulatory site for funded community-based research efforts
from NJMS as well as serving the health needs of this group.
