Description
of Fellowship Program
The UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School
Training Program provides an in-depth
yet broad exposure to clinical problems of
Gastroenterology. The program has a long and consistent
history of graduating physicians that are scholarly
clinicians who can bring expertise
into the community. The training program utilizes
the extensive clinical and laboratory facilities found
at University Hospital (UMDNJ-NJMS),
East Orange Veteran's Administration Hospital, and
Hackensack University Medical Center. The
three institutions bring a diversity of clinical cases
ranging from community gastroenterology to difficult
to manage cases found at a large university referral
center.
The three-year fellowship is fully accredited.
Fellows in the clinical program will complete a
first and second year of intensive clinical work
with early focus on an area of special interest.
During the first year of training, emphasis is placed
on acquisition of endoscopy skills. Most first year
and second year fellows
spend more than six months
learning and performing upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, and
flexible sigmoidoscopy in a high volume endoscopy
unit. These skills are taught
by superior clinical faculty at each of the three
institutions.
Other intensive rotations include Hepatology,
Liver Transplantation, and Nutrition. Each
institution has their own out-patient clinics, where
the fellows are exposed to different demographics
base. Although, the fellows see a variety
of patients, they are able to develop their own
patient base in the continuity clinic. Opportunities
exist for specialized rotations in certain gastroenterology
fields such as inflammatory bowel disease and motility.
During the third year of training, clinical
fellows will have continual clinical and research
experiences in their area of interest. Potential
pathways for specialty interests include Inflammatory
Bowel Disease, Hepatology, Nutrition, General Gastroenterology
and Therapeutic Procedures.
The program fosters dynamic
mentor relationships to help achieve each fellows
potential.

The University of Medicine and
Dentistry is an equal opportunity, affirmative
action employer and applications are encouraged
from minority groups and physically disadvantaged
individuals. Please note applicants must be Board
eligible in internal medicine to apply.
