History
In the Health Care Cost Reduction
Act of 1991, the New Jersey Legislature authorized the establishment
of the Primary Care Physician and Dentist Loan Redemption Program
of New Jersey (LRP). In 1999, P.L. c46 was signed to amend the LRP,
which included Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Nurse Practitioners
and Physician Assistants to participate in the program. The goal
of the LRP is to promote access to primary care services in state
designated underserved areas and health professional shortage areas
by improving the maldistribution of primary care health personnel.
As an incentive, this program provides for the redemption of qualifying
educational loans for its participants in exchange for specified
periods of service in underserved areas.
