Biography

Guy Payne, Jr., was born on February 6, 1907, in Cedar Grove, NJ. He 'prepared' at Montclair Academy, Montclair, NJ, and graduated Union College in Schenectady, NY, in June 1928. He obtained his medical degree in 1932 from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. From the Associate Dean's letter of recommendation during his third year: "He has done very satisfactory work at this school and has an average grade of a little better than B for his three years work. He is a young man of pleasant personality, with good manners and some cultural background, and appears to get along with students and instructors. His father is a physician and he has been brought up in good medical traditions."[1] Dr. Payne, Sr. served as Medical Superintendent at Overbrook Hospital for the Insane, Cedar Grove.

Dr. Payne, Jr. interned and served his residency at Newark City Hospital between 1932 and 1934. He served in the following areas:

Oct-Dec 1932Medical Junior
Jan-Mar 1933Surgical Junior
April-June 1933Ambulance Surgeon
July-Sept 1933House Physician

He seems to have also maintained an office in Cedar Grove during this period or immediately following his residency. In 1946, Dr. Payne applied to become a Fellow-In-Anesthesiology in the American Society of Anesthesiologists. In 1962, he sought licensure in Vermont.

Dr. Payne died on April 23, 1978, and was living in Hyde Park, VT. He was survived by his wife, Marion, two daughters, and a son.
