INTRODUCTION

The records of the New Jersey Medical School date from 1956 to 1981, and those of UMDNJ- New Jersey Medical School date from 1982 to the present. The collection totals approximately 36 linear feet. They form Record Group D in the Bergen University Archives. The records are open for research without restrictions under the conditions of the Archives' access policy.

ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

The oldest medical school in the State, New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), was established as New Jersey's College of Medicine when Seton Hall University incorporated the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry (SHCMD) in 1954. The original school was located at the Jersey City Medical Center. Charles L. Brown, MD was appointed first dean. The charter class of seventy-two men and eight women began their studies in September 1956 and graduated in 1960.

NJMS became a public medical school when Governor Richard Hughes signed the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry Act in 1964. The school remained in Jersey City until the move to Newark began in 1967. Students and faculty used the facilities of the East Orange VA Hospital, as well as other area hospitals for clinical education during the transition period. NJMS became part of the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1970. NJMS remained in the interim facilities while the Medical Sciences Building was constructed, moving there in 1977. Martland Hospital, then College (later University) Hospital, was the core teaching hospital. In 1989, ground breaking was held for a $55 million Doctors Office Center to house the NJMS's University Faculty Practice, which opened in June 1992.

Minority education has a strong tradition in the history of the school. NJMS has consistently increased minority enrollment that compares favorably with enrollments at predominantly black medical schools. NJMS has a successful partnership with the Hispanic Center of Excellence, a program designed to increase the number of Latinos to tenured medical faculty positions. In 1972, the Students for Medicine Program was initiated to make medical careers more accessible to minority students.

PROVENANCE

The records of the New Jersey Medical School have been given to the UMDNJ Bergen University Archives since the early 1980s, materials are continually added to as materials are donated by faculty, staff, and students.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The New Jersey Medical School collection spans the years 1956 to the present. The bulk of the material dates from the mid-1960s onward. The collection contains documents from the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry from 1957 to 1965, the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry from 1965 to 1970, and the College/University of Medicine and Dentistry from 1971 to the present. The collection is strong on school publications, including a full run of school catalogs, a complete set of yearbooks, and various school, student and faculty publications. Faculty and curriculum development are represented by the minutes from the Executive Faculty Council meetings and other faculty Ad Hoc committees, as well as the Curriculum Elective Booklets.

The records are divided into thirteen series: Publications, Executive Faculty Council, Ad Hoc Committees, Boricua Health Organization, Photographs, Office of the Dean, Houseofficer Training Program, Departmental Records, Medical Alumni Association, the Student American Medical Women's Association (SAMWA), New Jersey Medical School Pre-College  Program, and two open series.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

SERIES I. PUBLICATIONS, 1956--.
This series consists of various in-house publications from NJMS. Materials include newsletters, bulletins, brochures, catalogs, programs, flyers, departmental publications, and material from the NJMS 40th Anniversary. Containers are organized by title or subject. Folder contents are arranged chronologically. Researchers should note that the 1956-1965 Bulletin of Information (school catalog) for the Seton Hall College of Medicine is located in this series.

SERIES III. Executive Faculty Council MINUTES, 1961--. Arranged Chronologically. This series contains memos, agenda and minutes regarding the actions of the Faculty Council.

SERIES IV. Ad Hoc Committees, 1968-1970.

SUBSERIES A: Ad Hoc Committee to Integrate and Coordinate the Medical Curriculum. Records, 1968-1969.
This series contains memos, interim reports, charts, and table of contents. It is arranged chronologically. The purpose of the Committee was to develop a new curriculum that was "multi-disciplinary, integrated - coordinated." The curriculum was to be reduced to 3 years of basic sciences and clinical course work allowing the fourth year for clinical clerkship electives.

SUBSERIES B: Ad Hoc Committee on the Relation of the Curriculum to the Interim Facilities, 1969.
This committee was charged "to discuss and make recommendations relative to the priorities, logistics, and plans for the interim facilities."

SUBSERIES C: Ad Hoc Teaching Laboratory Committee, 1968.
This committee was to plan the teaching labs in the interim facilities.

SUBSERIES D: Preclinical Curriculum, 1969.
This subseries contains a report entitled, "Comments and Reports on Proposed Preclinical Curriculum" (1969).

SUBSERIES E: Ad Hoc Curriculum Committee, 1970.
This survey aimed to determine what material presented by the basic science departments was considered irrelevant in clinical medicine. The committee identified material that could be used in a core course of basic science education.

SERIES VI. BORICUA HEALTH ORGANIZATION RECORDS, 1980-1992.
The BHO records document a student Latino organization at NJMS. This series is arranged first chronologically, then within broad subject categories. The records are only roughly sorted by date. Some duplication may be evident. Also with this series are: Ramon Emeterio Betances Award plaques given to Elliot Bennit Guerrero and Ruben Quintana, both date April 7, 1990; and a videotape labeled, "M. Lisboa, Student Affairs, 12/2/87," which is probably related to BHO 10th Anniversary Celebration, 1987.

SERIES VII. PHOTOGRAPHS, 1983-1982, n. d.
This series contains three black and white prints. Two prints are of J. Harmon Pinckney, PhD, the first Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at SHCMD. Both photographs are undated. The third photograph is a group shot of the Department of Anatomy Faculty in 1981-1982.

SERIES VIII. OFFICE OF THE DEAN, 1962 --.
This series is composed of records from the NJMS Dean's Office. It is divided into two subseries:

SUBSERIES A: Alphabetical Subject Files, 1962-1977.
Document types include directories, reports, minutes, correspondence, grant applications, memos, and more.

SUBSERIES B: Miscellaneous Records, 1966-1969.
This subseries consists of minutes and reports of various planning and curriculum committees. [80-07]

SERIES IX. HOUSEOFFICER TRAINING PROGRAM, 1975--.
This series contains House Officer Training Program brochures from various NJMS departments. The brochures provide information about graduate and residency programs at the NJMS. Material is compiled from various accessions, and is organized by department.

SERIES X. DEPARTMENTAL RECORDS. MISCELLANY, 1967 --.
This series contains miscellaneous material from NJMS departments. It is arranged alphabetically by subject.

SERIES XI. MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION. RECORDS, 1968 --.
This series contains record books, brochures, programs, directories, and newsletters. Subjects include annual reunions and scholarship and award dinners. There is also a lecture by Harold J. Jeghers, MD.

SERIES XII. STUDENT AMERICAN MEDICAL WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION (SAMWA). RECORDS, 1973-1991.
The SAMWA is the NJMS-student chapter of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA). It is open to both male and female medical students.

This series documents the SAMWA through flyers, memoranda, letters, and newsletters.

Scope & Content Note

The records of the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) Pre-College Programs date from 1984 to 2000. The records include files from the various NJMS Pre-College Programs for minority students in the Northern New Jersey area. From 1981-1995, the program provided by the NJMS was named Minority High School Student Biomedical Research Apprentices. Erich Hirschberg, PhD who directed grants and fundraisers for the program, administrated the program from 1981-1988. In 1988, Dr. Ophelia Gona took control and continued the Minority High School Student Biomedical Research Apprentices until the NIH-funded grant ended in 1995. In 1994, Dr. Gona continued the pre-college program for minority student apprentices by running it under a program named Explorations, and later, in 1996, it was run under the name SMART, which stands for "Science, Math, and Related Topics".

Documents include newsletters, memos, correspondence, grant applications, programs, student essays and projects, photos of staff and students, scholarship applications, honors, awards, curriculum materials, student comments, calendars, and membership lists. The documents are arranged alphabetically by subject.
