Select Databases Relevant to Nursing

  • Academic Search Premier
    Covers a wide range of academic areas including arts, business, communication, education, humanities, language and linguistics, literature, sciences, social sciences, technology and women's studies. Full text is provided for more than 2,330 journals dating back to 1990. Academic Search Premier allows you to limit search results to scholarly or peer-reviewed journals.

  • Cochrane Library
    The Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world's best medical research studies, and are recognised as the gold standard in evidence-based health care.   • Drug Information ToolKit Databases

  • Dynamed
    This point-of-use evidence based medicine resource is available as a web-based and PDA product. See the Resources for the PDA section of this toolkit for the direct link to the PDA download page.
    Dynamed covers over 1,800 medical topics, including drug topics. To date Dynamed has 143 summaries under the category of Drugs. These summaries represent unique Dynamed content and focus on drug classes, but some individual drug overviews exist. An example is the warfarin (Coumadin) summary which contains valuable drug information such as management of overcoagulation with warfarin. Also extensive drug summaries are incorporated into disease and condition monographs of Dynamed. Dynamed drug information is updated as new evidence is identified in the literature.

  • eMedicine (free version from Internet)
    eMedicine presents a collection of monographs that cover 65 professional specialties and three consumer areas, complete with full streaming video, audio, and color images suitable for clinical and teaching purposes. It contains a section of Tools, such as Case of the Week.

  • First Consult
    A web and PDA based clincial information system that provides continuously updated, evidence-based. guidance on the latest in patient evaluation, diagnosis, and management. Designed for rapid access at the point of patient care.

  • Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI) (OvidSP search engine)
    Provides access to information on measurement instruments (i.e. questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science.

  • Medline (OvidSP search engine)
    Medline is a search product from the National Library of Medicine. Like many search products it can be viewed on many platforms. You may already be familiar with using Medline on the PubMed "platform."

  • Natural Medicine's Comprehensive Database

  • Nursing and Allied Health Collection
    This database covers the areas of nursing, biomedicine, health sciences, consumer health and allied health disciplines, and contains full text for nearly 400 journals indexed in CINAHL.

  • PubMed
    The PubMed link above possesses a different web address than the PubMed you've no doubt used as a member of the public. This PubMed link allows you to perform your PubMed search as usual, but view a UMDNJ icon denoting full-text access to UMDNJ journal holdings when available.

  • NORD's Rare Disease Database

  • PsycINFO (OvidSP search engine)
    PsycINFO allows you to limit search results to scholarly or peer-reviewed journals.

  • Web of Science
    ISI Web of Science is the web-based version of the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index. It covers over 6,000 U.S. and international, multidisciplinary journals. This database is useful for tracking citations in the published literature with some unique features. Related Records locates articles that have cited references in common; and Times Cited provides a list of articles that cite a source article. Also, try Journal Citation Reports to determine top nursing journals you may wish to publish in.

Resources for the PDA (Handheld Devices)

  • Dynamed for PDA
    This point-of-use evidence based medicine resource is available as a web-based and PDA product. Obtain a serial number: Email dynamedsupport@epnet.com from your UMDNJ email account (no other email accounts will be accepted) requesting a serial number for your PDA device, or, ask for a serial number from a reference librarian at your UMDNJ campus library.

    Epocrates RX Pro drug reference is part of Epocrates Essentials which also includes disease and diagnostic reference for PDA and in Epocrates RX Online. RX Pro includes a nursing IV products section--complete with an IV drip rate calculator and IV compatibility checker. Lastly, a free download of Epocrates Rx is currently available for Palm OS and now finally for Pocket PC!

This link is part of the Virtual Hospital website. Virtual Hospital is no longer being updated due to lack of funding, but many Virtual Hospital web pages and resources are still available online and worth a look.

U.S. Census Bureau
The Census is a useful site for looking up some health and social statistics of populations, including minority groups. HealthWeb Nursing
Portal to health information on the Internet. This specific link should bring you to a listing of nursing specific topics including Nursing Informatics, Evidence-Based Nursing, and Psychiatric Nursing. Click on each topic of interest for web sites pertaining to that area. HealthWeb also offers links to Nursing Organizations such as the American Nurses Associations, National State Board of Nursing (NCLEX) and National League of Nursing. Lastly, this site offers a search box for locating specific health information resources.

This easy to use site possessing a fairly clean interface includes drug monographs, patient education, and top 200 prescribed drugs. The search engine employs "fuzzy logic" to find sound alike terms - useful for hard to spell drug names. Some outdated references, as drug knowledge landscape has potential to change daily. Instructions to Authors in the Health Sciences
Use this site from the Mulford Library (Medical University at Ohio in Toledo), to link to over 3,500 health and life science journal publisher websites, where one can locate submission guidelines for those specific health science journals. Type a journal name in the "Journal Title Search" box and you can retrieve a page with instructions for submitting a manuscript to that particular publication, including the bibliographic style expected for references in your submission.

New Jour
Provides a listing of newly added electronic journals and newsletters available on the Internet from a whole host of disciplines, but there is also an archival alphabetical list of online journals and newsletters. Searchers beware the alphabetical list is lengthy, so consider using the New Jour search box to locate specific journals on your topic of interest. Also, not all available issues for listed Internet titles are free, but some are. A recent search on diabetes yielded at least 41 journal and/or newsletter titles from American Diabetes Association's Clinical Diabetes to Journal of Diabetes and its Complications.

Nurse Author & Editor Journal Directory
Initially a print publication, this online resource supports nurses' writing, reviewing and editing. The Journals Directory link on this site is useful to view manuscript submission guidelines for listed titles.
