Resources for the PDA (Handheld Devices)

  • Dynamed
    This point-of-use evidence based medicine resource is available as a web-based and PDA product. Obtain a serial number: Email dynamedsupport@epnet.com from your UMDNJ email account (no other email accounts will be accepted) requesting a serial number for your PDA device, or, ask for a serial number from a reference librarian at your UMDNJ campus library.
    To date Dynamed has 143 summaries under the category of Drugs. These summaries represent unique Dynamed content and focus on drug classes, but some individual drug overviews exist. An example is the warfarin (Coumadin) summary which contains valuable drug information such as management of overcoagulation with warfarin. Also extensive drug summaries are incorporated into disease and condition monographs of Dynamed. Dynamed drug information is updated as new evidence is identified in the literature.
  • Epocrates
    Epocrates RX Pro drug reference is part of Epocrates Essentials which also includes disease and diagnostic reference for PDA and in Epocrates RX Online. RX Pro includes a nursing IV products section--complete with an IV drip rate calculator and IV compatibility checker. Lastly, a free download of Epocrates Rx is currently available for Palm OS and now finally for Pocket PC!

There is the offer of C.E. in a Letter and Site offers sign up for monthly email of table of contents. Lastly, Pharmacist's Letter offers a free PDA download with your subscription. Site offers sign up for monthly email of table of contents. For prescribers such as physicians and nurse practitioners consider a subscription to the Prescriber's Letter a product similar to the Pharmacists Letter.

PowerPak C. E.

This site offers free continuing education articles for nurses and pharmacists. Caution, C.E. articles are often funded by a drug company, so some bias may be present.

HIV InSite

Are you look for interactions among HIV drugs and interactions of some HIV drugs with non-HIV drugs? Then consider HIV InSite from University of California. "On the home, page click 'Medical'. Then click 'Drug Interactions Database' in the column on the left. Then you get three choices. You can pick an FDA-approved antiretroviral and see all the interactions with it that are in the database. Or you can pick any drug in the database and get all of its interactions with the antiretrovirals. Or you can pick any of about 20 drug classes and see their interactions with antiretrovirals."

Medical Letter Adverse Drug Reaction Program

This quick drug-drug interaction checker is based on The Medical Letter's Handbook of Adverse Drug Interactions. (There is also a PDA version of this software.) Many drugs can be located by brand or generic name and added to a user's list of drugs for interaction look up. Interactions on up to 12 drugs can be found at one time. Some herbal products and/or dietary supplements such as ginseng are included in the program's index of searchable drugs, but many others such as saw palmetto are absent from the program index and therefore users can not locate drug interactions for those substances.

The search engine employs "fuzzy logic" to find sound alike terms - useful for hard to spell drug names. Some outdated references, as drug knowledge landscape has potential to change daily.

Biospace

Biospace, like First Word allows you to subscribe to a free daily email alert. Key site features include the Biospace portal with links to news feed for researchers in the life sciences, as well as researchers in other health related fields. Pharmaceutical industry and drug news are also included in this gem making it a must have for any researcher looking for competitive intelligence information on the web.

NLM Drug Information Portal

Drug resources from the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cover a variety of drug topics such as medications and breastfeeding, chemical structures and toxicology.

This is a British-based site geared towards the pharmaceutical professional that contains current information on upcoming conferences and meetings, links to related websites, and discussion forums.

Prescribing Reference

Register for free access to a Web version of this product also available via print subscription. A free print offer for physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners exists. Producers of the product choose to include the top 3,000 most prescribed drugs according to IMS (an independent research company) market research. Noteworthy sections include a place to search for drug manufactures' contact information, as well as the company's corresponding Medical Affairs phone number. There is also a "New Products" section, "Charts" on such topics as common antibiotics for the pediatric population (including antibiotic dosage and flavor), and some "Guidelines" with reference links back to HSTAT (NLM's Health Services/Technology Assessment Database) and AHCPR (Agency for Health Care Research and Quality).

RxNorm is a National Library of Medicine (NLM ) endeavor on unifying clinical drug names "(active ingredient + strength + dose form)." Brand and generic drug names are included as well as relational information such as NDCs (National Drug Codes) and related brand names. For those involved in bioinformatics this site is worth a look, as it seeks to integrate drug vocabularies across pharmacy software.

WISER

This is the National Library of Medicine's site on Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER). Select any from over 350 listed hazardous substances and obtain information on compound verification, medical management of symptoms and more. Also, the site facilitates identification of unknown hazardous substances via a series of options to narrow down the possible offender. Download WISER for free for use on the Windows platform, Palm OS or Pocket PC.
