IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
FY2008 RESOURCE RENEWALS

UPDATE - February 21th 2008

A new subscription to LexisNexis has been obtained.

UPDATE - December 27th 2007

Due to careful scrutiny of all subscribed electronic and print resources and cost savings measures, the libraries have renewed select resources that were initially slated for cancellation on January 1, 2008. We are pleased to announce that access to the Annual Reviews and the full Science Direct Freedom Collection will be retained for calendar year 2008.

Message from the University Librarian
November 2007

Annually, during summer and fall, University Libraries staff reviews all of its subscriptions to print and electronic collections as part of a standing evaluation practice. This process involves reviewing use statistics and renewal costs, as these are critical factors that have a major impact on how the Libraries' budget will be allocated in the upcoming year. Annual inflationary increase rates for print and electronic resources approximate 10%. This factor, in conjunction with a flat state budget, makes renewal decisions a challenging process. The overriding goal is to maintain the quality of the overall scholarly resources collection, within the confines of the budget allocation.

The Libraries' are working to accomplish several objectives - transition from print to electronic versions of resources (books, journals and databases), renew existing resources (based on analysis of use and cost data), and acquire new electronic resources to provide the expected level of support of UMDNJ's education, research and patient care activities. Our users must have 24/7 electronic access to effectively perform their roles. This expanded access incurs a premium cost.

For calendar year 2008, the libraries did not renew subscriptions for 290 print journal titles, of which 266 titles are available electronically to our users. Usage for the remaining 24 titles did not merit subscription renewal. 2008 journal cancellations list

Below is a list of electronic resources that will not be renewed during this fiscal year. In most cases, the libraries provide access to comparable alternative resources in the subject discipline. Should you require access to a resource that will expire in the coming months, please reach out to your campus librarians who will assist you in acquiring articles or with using alternative similar resources that have been retained.

Our librarians have developed a comprehensive set of Toolkits organized by subject, which provide an overview of discipline specific subscribed electronic resources. The Toolkits can be found at: http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/toolkits/

The libraries look forward to meeting your ongoing needs for scholarly information. Please address your comments and concerns to me at: cohn@umdnj.edu
