Biography

Harold R. Harlan, DDS (1905-2003) practiced dentistry in Newark, NJ for fifty-one years before retiring. Dr. Harlan received a bachelor's degree from New York University, a master's degree in public health from Columbia University, and a doctorate in dental science from the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the Army Dental Corps Active Reserves for thirty-eight years.

He was a member of the Unity Club, Maplewood, the Rotary Club, B'nai B'rith, and was a 32^nd degree mason at the Salaam Temple, Livingston.

Dr. Harlan was a board member of the American Cancer Society, a director of the Dental Board for the City of Newark, president of the Essex County Dental Society, treasurer of the Newark Dental Club, and an elected member of the International College of Dentistry. He also was a member of the first class of dental interns at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and served as president of the New Jersey Public Health Association.

Scope & Content

The papers of Dr. Harold R. Harlan date from 1936 to 1976. There are gaps in the papers and some are undated. The majority of papers date between the 1950s and 1960s. The collection contains some correspondence but mainly printed items related to Dr. Harlan's career in New Jersey public health. He was especially active in the school dental program, the fluoridation movement, and a variety of professional and volunteer organizations, including the New Jersey Dental Association and the Essex County Dental Society. One file contains material by Dave Elman on self-hypnosis. The papers are arranged in the order in which they were received.
