Biographical Sketch

Paul H. Fluck, MD, was born circa 1911 in Philadelphia and raised in Pennington, NJ. He received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in 1935. After pursuing postgraduate training at George Washington University in ophthalmology, Dr. Fluck moved in 1936 to Lambertville where he maintained a practice until his retirement in 1968.

Dr. Fluck devoted himself to wildlife conservation and education after his retirement. He was a world renowned researcher, writer, and lecturer with a special interest in ornithology. Dr. Fluck did extensive research in avian vision and banded more than 125,000 birds in his career. From 1952 to 1969, Dr. Fluck served as executive director of the Washington Crossing Nature Education Center. In 1969, under the sponsorship of James Rand, he established the Rand Memorial Nature Center in Freeport, Bahamas, where he served as executive director until 1984.

Dr. Fluck wrote extensively about his subject and appeared on many television programs. He was honored with a number of awards for his contributions to wildlife conservation. Dr. Fluck was married to Jeanne Pittman Fluck and had a daughter. He died on March 10, 1995. For additional information about Dr. Fluck, please see his Biographical File.

Scope and Content Note

The Paul H. Fluck, MD, Papers date from 1937 to 1965, with gaps. The papers consist of two series documenting Dr. Fluck's medical and wildlife conservation careers: a file of his medical and wildlife conservation articles published in popular journals, and a representative sample of Dr. Fluck's physician logs of accounts. A Biographical File containing a variety of materials about Dr. Fluck was formed, and separated from the collection. Sixteen black and white and color photographic prints (1950-94) were removed from the collection, and placed in the Photo Archives.
