Research Support
The Scientific Server
Welcome to the Scientific Server homepage! The University runs a Sun Microsystems SunFire F6900 computer in support of a number of compute intensive research applications. These applications include EMBOSS; molecular dynamics, docking, SAS and R to name a few. The server is driven by 24 UltraSparc IV dual-core processors operating at 1.2 GHz and has been partitioned into multiple, independent computing domains, each dedicated to particular computing tasks. Resources including processor and storage can be moved between domains without affecting production operation. The server is complemented by a high performance Storage Area Network (SAN) capable of holding 8 Terabytes of data.
Request an Account - You can request an account so long as you have a valid UMDNJ e-mail account. To request an account for Informatics/Molecular Modeling usage, contact the research support person at 5-4473 or via e-mail or use the request form here. If you need an account for SAS (statistics) usage, contact the administrator at 5-4839 or via e-mail.

Conditions of Use. To protect data and the integrity of the computing environment, researchers must understand the following:
- Protect your data. Researchers are responsible for their own files; AST backups are for disaster recovery only. While the system is backed-up nightly, the tapes are overwritten every week. We can only recover files from the day before in the unlikely event of a storage system failure resulting in the loss of data. Files cannot be recovered from a week ago or longer. If you inadvertently delete a file, you must restore it from your own backup media. We strongly recommend that you make your own back-ups periodically while you work. We do not archive user account data when a researcher leaves the University. Secure shell (ssh, scp & sftp) is required for communication with the server.
- Be aware of system capacities. Compute-intensive processes may be interrupted once per month for re-boots required for system maintenance. Re-boots will terminate any VNC sessions.Generally, system maintenance will be scheduled for the second Saturday of each month. All users with accounts on the scientific server will be notified by email of routine and emergency re-boots.
- Use Sun Grid Engine to submit batch jobs to the queue! Download the SGE Primer here (sge_primer.pdf).
