Acceptable Use Policies, Procedures
and User Responsibility
Users of HP&RC systems must comply with any general utilization policies promulgated by UMDNJ Information Services and Technologies and any other University authority tasked with oversight of acceptable use of University information technology assets and the protection of confidential and sensitive information stored and managed by such assets. Additional information can be found at Policies and Procedures. The user should also refer to the Office of Compliance & Corporate Integrity at Compliance Website for further information regarding the responsible use of University technical systems.
Certain storage areas on HP&RC scientific systems are backed up on a daily basis. Backups are conducted primarily for recovery purposes in the unlikely event of data loss due to equipment or software failures, operator error or environmental or natural events that result in data loss. From a user perspective, home directory file and folder trees are included in daily backups with a weekly retention period but may be included in other backup schedules with longer retention periods. Again, backups are intended for disaster recovery. Very large storage areas available for housing data during the on-line life of a research project are not generally included for backup. Although HP&RC storage systems are extremely reliable and equipment is housed in a state-of-the-art data center, we strongly recommend that users make their own backups of data that cannot be regenerated. Users are also encouraged to contact us to discuss specialized data storage requirements and to inquire about specific backup schedules and retention policies to ascertain that the data protection HP&RC is providing meets their expectations or research requirements.
