1999-2001 Patterns of Drug Abuse Mong Mexican American Adults, DA 12167-2, NIDA, Principal Investigator, $185,017. This secondary analyses project will identify risk factors for specific substances, and drug abuse or dependence in a sample of Mexican and Mexican American adults from urban, small towns, and rural areas of Central California. In addition, services utilization patterns for individuals with substance abuse problems, including dual diagnoses, are identified. The data base is the Mexican American Prevalence and other data bases of the International Consortium of Psychiatric Epidemiology.
2001-2005 National Latino Epidemiologic Survey, NIMH, Co-Principal Investigator. A national survey of the Hispanic population to estimate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and patterns of services utilization for recent disorders. This five year study includes subsamples for Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and other Hispanics. The study compares rates of disorders (DSM-IV) and utilization patterns with those of the general population, African American and Asian populations in the United States. Instrumentation includes the CIDI as the case ascertainment protocol.
