Message from The Executive Director Adam Perlman

Autumn is the time of year when change is reflected in the visually interesting red, yellow and golden leaves that dust the landscape. This has been an interesting season for us here at ICAM as well, with a number of exciting developments that have changed our internal landscape.

Student Perspective on CAM

For many years now, I have had a very keen interest in all types of CAM modalities. I have a very diverse background and am also a CAM practitioner myself. I try to keep current with the literature and in my quest for knowledge in this ever-expansive field, look for any and all opportunities to learn more about alternative medicine. It was for this reason that I registered this semester to take the WebCT Seminar in Complementary and Alternative Medicine through the School of Health Related Professions at UMDNJ. I am very interested in the new graduate program in Integrative Health & Wellness and will be applying for admission in the spring. More > >

The second training left me with a little more knowledge, but without the confidence to start using it. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth training (I had already invested so much money in training and equipment that I was not going to give up), which incidentally were one on one, gave me the confidence to initiate treatment with my first chronic pain patient. Ayurveda: The Oldest Medical System

Ayurveda is considered the oldest medical system in the world because it is extensively described in Rigved, (ancient Sanskrit text 4500 BC to 1600 BC) and the complete medical texts are still extant (1). Although it dates back to ancient times, it is very much in daily practice today by millions in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka , and becoming increasingly popular in the United States. More > >

Research Roundup

For the first time, the American College of Chest Physicians (AACP) has issued evidence-based guidelines that recommend mind-body modalities as part of a multimodality approach to reduce the anxiety, mood disturbances and chronic pain associated with lung cancer. Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women in the United States , causing more deaths than the next four most common cancers combined: colon, breast, pancreas, and prostate.
