All UMDNJ faculty, students, and other individuals involved in human subjects research are required to complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Basic Course prior to IRB approval. This requirement also extends to all IRB members and Human Subjects Protection program staff.
Campus IRBs will not issue final approval of any IRB submissions until it is verified that listed study personnel have completed the current requirements for human subjects research education.

With very few exceptions, learners must select the first option: ‘Yes, I would like to take the CITI Basic Course required by UMDNJ.'
Question 2: Please choose from one of the first four options ONLY.
Do NOT select the ‘reference’ group unless you have FIRST completed the CITI Basic Course / Refresher course required by UMDNJ. This ‘group’ is similar to a library’s reference section. You may return to this section any time you wish; however, content is available for informational purposes only. You will NOT receive credit for any modules ‘reviewed’ in the Reference Group.
Question 3: If you selected ‘Yes’ to answer Question # 1, you MUST also select ‘I have not previously completed a UMDNJ-approved CITI Basic Course’. Any other answer here will take you to a ‘Refresher Course’. Please note that UMDNJ learners need the Basic Course first; there are very few exceptions.
1. Go to http://www.citiprogram.org and logon with your username and password.
2. Return to the Main Menu and click on the link in the column labeled ‘Status’. The column labeled ‘Status’ will appear as ‘not started’ or ' incomplete - Re-enter' . Click on this link to gain access to the required modules and associated quizzes.
a. Each module of the required Basic Course takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes to complete. You may log in as many times as necessary; however, you may only print a ‘Completion Report’ after all required modules / quizzes are completed.
b. The minimum passing aggregate score is 80%. A running tally is automatically compiled for you by the CITI system.
Note: The Course status options are listed below:
If you have taken the CITI education at another institution within the last three (3) years, you may not need to repeat the Basic Course at this time; however, UMDNJ needs to verify that the CITI modules you have completed meet the UMDNJ human subjects protection education requirement.
To do this, you must change your affiliation to include UMDNJ.
1. Go to http://www.citiprogram.org and logon with your username and password.
2. Return to the main learner menu and select 'Affiliate with another institution'. Work through this screen. You will be prompted to answer the following three enrollment questions.
Question 1: Please select ‘Yes, I would like to take the CITI Basic Course required by UMDNJ.'
Question 2: To select a learner group, please choose from one of the first four options ONLY.
Please note: The ‘Reference’ group’ is similar to a library’s reference section. Content is available for informational purposes only; you will NOT receive credit for any modules ‘reviewed’ in this learner group.
Question 3: You MUST select ‘I have not previously completed an approved Basic Course’ here.
This allows the computer system to compare CITI modules already taken with those required by UMDNJ.
You must return to the ‘Learner’s Menu’ to determine whether you have completed the Basic Course modules required by UMDNJ. The column labeled ‘Status’ will appear as either ‘ Incomplete - Re-enter’ or ‘Passed - completion date’. Click on the re-enter link to gain access to any outstanding modules needed to complete UMDNJ’s specific education requirement.
If your ‘status’ appears as Passed - completion date, this means there are no additional modules you need to take at this time; simply print a completion report.
UMDNJ requires that once you have completed a UMDNJ-approved Basic Course, you must complete the UMDNJ CITI Refresher Course every three (3) years.
You will receive an automatic reminder from CITI approximately 90 days prior to your anniversary date.
You may return to the CITI site once you have completed the Basic Course.
In order to begin the refresher course, go to http://www.citiprogram.org and logon with your username and password.
