Answers
Human Resources Services Organization
1. What does the title "Human Resources Generalist" mean?
Similar to a triage nurse, the Generalist serves as a single point of contact for one or more schools or units, eliminating the need for the employee or management, to know the HR organizational structure. The Generalist responds to requests, or may refer the request to a subject matter expert in Compensation, Labor Relations, Benefits, Data Administration or Human Resources Information Systems. They are your business partners and are in a position to advocate for you, ensuring the HR solution responds to your needs.
2. In this model, what are the responsibilities of employees in the other areas of HR, such as Compensation, Benefits or Labor Relations?
The responsibilities of these employees do not change. They must be knowledgeable at a detailed level, in their respective areas and serve as a resource to the Generalist and our customers.
3. If I have a question, may I contact a subject specialist directly or am I now required to speak with the Generalist first, or have a referral from the Generalist?
To ensure the Generalist stays informed about developments in your operating unit, it is preferred that you first speak with the Generalist. However, if you have an established contact within one of the specialist areas, you may contact her/him directly. The specialist should advise the Generalist of your request so that she/he remains informed about developments in your operating unit and can follow up, if necessary; this fosters internal and external collaboration, expedites a timely solution and enhances HR staff development.
4. How will the HR Generalist structure benefit me?
You will benefit from the HR Generalist structure in the following ways:
- You will have a short-cut to HR services by placing one call to your assigned Generalist
- Consistency in accountability and responsiveness
- You contribute to goal setting and evaluating your Generalist
- You will have the ability to educate the Generalist about your priorities and future goals and therefore develop a personalized partnership with HR
5. If I am not satisfied with the solutions that my Generalist recommends, what are my options?
If you are not happy with the recommended solutions, you do have options. We do want to be flexible and assist you in getting the best result; however, there may be certain HR guidelines such as regulations, contractual obligations or protocols the Generalist must use to formulate the resolution. You may discuss your issue with the subject specialist or the HR Campus Director. These professionals can help arrive at an answer that may be more in line with the direction you want to go.
For Supervisors
